Regional meet

JOPLIN, Mo. — Northwest Missouri State University senior Maria Mostek of Creston was the top finisher for her team and placed 58th overall at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Central Regional Championships Saturday.

Mostek’s time was 23:04.2 on the 6,000-meter course. As a team the Bearcats placed 13th. The men placed 17th and were led by runner-up Karim Achengli, who qualified for the NCAA national championship on Dec. 1 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in a 10K time of 30:04.6.

Mustangs advance

SIOUX CITY — No. 1 Morningside passed its first postseason NAIA football test with 49-20 home victory over Rocky Mountain College Saturday.

Trent Solsma had 368 passing yards with four touchdowns. Connor Niles had 13 catches for 190 yards and three TDs. Defensive end Seth Maitlen of Creston had three solo tackles in the victory.

Morningside, moving to 12-0, steps back on to its home turf Saturday, Nov. 24. A semifinal round opportunity is at stake, as St. Xavier University of Illinois makes the western trek.

Bearcats win

ALLENDALE, Mich. — The Northwest Missouri State University football team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs with a 42-17 victory over Grand Valley State on Saturday.

The Bearcats will play Ferris State on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 1 p.m. on the FSU campus in Big Rapids, Michigan. The second-seeded Bulldogs beat Harding 21-19 at home in round one.

UNI in playoffs

CEDAR FALLS — The University of Northern Iowa Panthers host Lamar in the NCAA FCS playoffs at 4 p.m. Saturday in the UNI-Dome.

The Panthers (6-5) will make their 20th FCS playoff appearance and 10th under head coach Mark Farley Saturday. The winner advances to play at sixth-seeded UC-Davis of the Big Sky Conference.

Spencer Brown of Lenox started at offensive right guard as the Panthers ended the regular season Saturday with a 37-0 home victory over Missouri State.

Tournament MVP

St. JOSEPH, Minn. — Tournament MVP Jenna Taylor of Creston scored 32 points to help the Storm move to 3-0 with an 84-80 overtime victory over Saint Benedict in the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament.

Taylor averaged 25 points and 10.5 rebounds while shooting 57 percent from the field for the Storm in the tournament.

The Storm sank a school-record 16 3-pointers in the championship game. On Friday Simpson defeated Saint Mary’s 72-62. Taylor had 18 points and nine rebounds in that game, shooting 3-4 from 3-point range.

The Storm are off until conference play opens Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Wartburg.

Chargers rebound

SIOUX CITY — The 10th-ranked Briar Cliff men’s basketball team bounced back from Wednesday’s loss to crosstown rival Morningside with a 100-89 victory over Doane University Saturday.

Senior Jay Wolfe of Creston had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Chargers, now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in GPAC play. Jackson Lamb of Nodaway Valley added 11 points. Point guard Erich Erdman poured in a game-high 27 points for the Chargers, who play Mount Marty Tuesday night in Yankton, South Dakota.
