Ten Raiders earn all-district

After a 7-3 finish to the season and a postseason appearance, the Mount Ayr Raiders earned 10 spots on the Class 1A District 8 all-district team.

John Shields, Reas Knapp, Keelan Klommhaus and Dawson Frost all were recognized as first team awardees for their performances this season.

Shields put together a team-high 72 tackles along with 10 quarterback sacks and 24 tackles for loss on defense while also serving as the Raiders’ center.

The 10 quarterback sacks were tied for the most in Class 1A this season.

Finishing second on the team in total tackles was Knapp with 65 while also recording five tackles for loss and two interceptions.

Knapp also picked up 39 carries for 256 yards and a touchdown on the ground while catching a lone pass out of the backfield for 12 yards.

Keelan Klommhaus ended the 2018 campaign as the Raiders’ second leading rusher with 427 yards on 35 carries and seven touchdowns. His role on defense led to 52 1/2 tackles along with seven solo tackles for loss.

Making the switch from quarterback to wide receiver didn’t slow Frost, who was Mount Ayr’s top pass catcher with 34 receptions for 420 yards and six scores.

On defense Frost recorded 14 1/2 tackles, an interception and two fumble recoveries.

Second team

Isaac Grose picked up a second team all-district nod with 62 tackles on defense and eight solo quarterback sacks.

On offense the junior pulled down 12 catches for 110 yards and ran the ball 15 times for 51 yards.

With four kickoff returns for touchdowns, tying the second most in an 11-man season and picking up a second team all-district selection was Hunter Haveman.

On top of the explosiveness on kick returns, Haveman ran for 100 yards on 20 carries, caught five passes for 26 yards and made 19 1/2 tackles on defense along with a sack.

Kolben Klommhaus earned an all-district selection for his role on both sides of the ball as he recorded 25 1/2 tackles on defense while picking up 176 yards on offense receiving. Klommhaus also had 77 yards rushing.

Raider quarterback Payton Weehler also was a second team selection as he eclipsed a 1,000 yards passing in his first season under center. Weehler tossed 12 touchdowns along with nine interceptions and was Mount ayr’s leading rusher with 664 yards on the ground with five additional touchdowns.

Defensively, Weehler recorded 34 1/2 tackles.

Rounding out Mount Ayr’s second team selection was Myles Greene who had 106 rushing yards, 127 receiving yards and 127 yards passing combining five scores among the three cateogries.

Greene served as the Raider kicker, hitting 24 extra points as well as a lone, 37-yard field goal.

Mount Ayr’s Drew Willis was chosen an an honorable mention for the all-district team after his senior season.

Willis recorded 17 1/2 tackles on defense, including four solo tackles for loss while also blocking up front on the Raider offensive line.

Van Meter’s Spencer Lamb was also named to the first team all-district defensive team.
