Busy first week for middle school boys

8th grade boys

Creston eighth-grade boys started the season Nov. 8 with a 37-17 victory over Red Oak, taking a 15-2 halftime lead.

Kyle Strider led the Panthers with 16 points and Patrick Varner and Jaydan Pettegrew each tallied seven points.

“It was a good first game,” said Creston coach Larry McNutt. “We got off to a good start. We got better defensively as the game went on and identified some areas for improvement. The guys gave a good effort throughout the game.”

Lenox A team defeated the Creston eighth-grade B team 51-0 on Nov. 12.

“The boys were trying to do their best against a good Lenox A team,” said Creston coach Scott Wagner. “Even though the score did not turn out like we hoped, the experience against good players will only make us better in the long run.”

Kyle Stafford had five rebounds for Creston.

On Nov. 13, Creston eighth-grade boys defeated Nodaway Valley 46-31, rallying from a 22-20 halftime deficit.

“The boys did a good job,” coach McNutt said. “It was a close game and our defense led us to pull away in the fourth quarter. It was a good team effort.”

Pettegrew led the Panthers with 13 points and Crawford added 11.

7th grade boys

The Creston seventh-grade boys basketball team defeated Nodaway Valley 58-15 on Tuesday. Dylan Calvin led the Panthers with 11 points. Sam Henry and Tony Davidson each contributed 10 points.

“We got a good balanced effort scoring tonight and did a nice job sharing the ball,” Creston coach Mike McCabe said. “We were pretty solid on defense. A little helter skelter early but we settled in on the offensive end.”

Lucas Rushing led Creston with seven points in a 17-2 victory in the B game.
