Sorensen defeats Varley; Reynolds remains Governor

Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II (R-Greenfield) took 7,648 (62 percent) of House District 20's votes to defeat Warren Varley (D-Stuart), who had 4,613 votes, in the election held Tuesday. Sorensen will succeed Clel Baudler, who has retired as state representative after a nearly two decade stint in the seat.

In Adair County races for the Board of Supervisors, Jodie Hoadley, incumbent Democrat opposing Doug Davidson for the District 4SE seat, received 354 votes (56.2 percent) and retains the seat over Davidson. In District 2NE, Steven Shelley, a Democrat incumbent running unopposed, took 488 votes or 92.6 percent of the vote.

In other important races, Cindy Axne (D-West Des Moines) defeated incumbent David Young (R-Van Meter) for U.S. House District 3. Both candidates had visited Greenfield in the last month. Taking the Governor's race was incumbent Kim Reynolds (R-Osceola) over her challenger, Fred Hubbell (D-Des Moines).
