A number of the Halloween parties start this weekend. The annual Bright Eyes kids walk through McKinley Park is this Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. There are also lots of Halloween festivities going on around town at various establishments. Beggars Night is next Tuesday or Wednesday in many of the towns around the area. You can get a listing of towns and days in next week’s newspaper. We will have some treats at the paper next Wednesday for those that stop by.
Holiday to Holiday
Our annual pre-Holiday event is this Saturday at the “Big Top” outside of Hy-Vee. There will be over 30 vendors in both the Big Top and in the Hy-Vee store. It is always a good kickoff to the holiday season. There will be plenty of samples and lots of good ideas for you early Christmas shoppers. The event goes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Creston Hy-Vee.
The street project here in Creston hasn’t done very well this summer. The metal towers in the alleys here downtown were supposed to be down and the utilities moved along with the alley re-paved in the affected areas. The other problem is there sure seems to be lots of extra holes that are still exposed. I’m afraid the project is going to get held over to next year at the rate they are working on it. The Howard Street redo is also lagging behind. I’m hoping they have a concrete street before winter sets in. It seems like some poor management on the part of all these companies at getting things done. Maybe they should hold the pay for as long as it takes them to get it done!
Full steam ahead
The farmers are going full steam ahead now that they have some good weather to get the crops in. For the most part, I’ve heard of good yields for both the corn and beans. I’ve also heard that some areas of beans have got a bit of mold to them and have knocked the yield down into the upper teens. Harvest is always an interesting time.
The Casey’s on Highway 25 broke ground this past week. The current Casey’s at that location will close this Sunday. The old ISSB bank is long gone to make way for the new Casey’s facility. It looks like the new Casey’s will be much larger in size than the old one.
I hadn’t been out fishing for a couple of months. But I took some time out after work a couple of times lately to check out the fish. They are biting well. They are trying to fatten up for the winter months. I caught several fish in short order. October always to seems to be a good time of year to fish. I usually catch some of my biggest fish in October.
The local apples sure have been good this year. My friend Steve Wainwright runs an orchard 5 miles west of Bedford on Highway 2. The rains this year have made for some big and sweet apples. I’ve had a chance to pick apples and some of the apples are as big as softballs. There’s nothing better than a nice fresh apple off the tree.
We are less than two weeks away from the ending of Daylight Saving Time. Sunday, Nov. 4, is the time to change your clocks backwards.
That always kind of signals the start of winter for me.
Don’t forget to get out and vote. You can vote at the courthouse right now and of course on Nov. 6 you can find your polling place and make your vote count.
