MATURA offers low-income home energy assistance

Applications are currently being taken for the 2018-19 Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program for elderly and disabled (started Oct, 1). All other households can apply beginning Nov. 1. This program is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services through the Iowa Department of Human Rights/DCAA, and has been established to help qualifying low-income Iowa homeowners and renters pay for a portion of their primary heating costs.

The MATURA Action Corporation Outreach Center, 207B N. Elm St., in Creston will be taking applications from Oct. 1 through April 30, 2019, for households with a elderly/disabled member (all other households beginning Nov. 1) from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. To schedule an appointment, call the center at 641-782-8431.

Applicants will need to furnish some form of identification, a copy of their most recent heating and electric bill, social security card documentation for all household members and proof of all household members’ gross income for the past three months or for the past calendar year.

The assistance is based on household income, household size, type of fuel and other factors.

Eligibility for participation is established according to the following federal income guidelines:

This program is not designed to pay a household’s total energy costs. The program will provide supplemental assistance based on several factors. Those factors include total household income, household size, dwelling type, and type of heating fuel, among others.
