Corning

John Nevius, 88, of Corning died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2018, at Corning Specialty Care in Corning.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Pearson Family Funeral Service and Cremation Center, 701 Seventh St., in Corning with Larry Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery in Corning. Open visitation will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, with family present from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the funeral home. John Martin Nevius Jr., son of Bertha (Gillet) and John Martin Nevius Sr., was born May 25, 1930, at home in Corning. John was a lifelong resident of Corning and graduated with the class of 1948. John joined the Air Force in 1951, and served four years during the Korean War, most of which was spent in Germany as a draftsman. After returning to Corning, John worked in several retail stores including Biggar’s Grocery, Dunham Drug and Turner’s Clothing.

On June 26, 1964, he married Jean Pembrook Warner, and shortly thereafter adopted her two children, Jack and Joan. Jeffrey was born into the family in 1966. He worked for the National Farmers Organization, where he was employed for 30 years until the NFO left Corning in 1990. John remained in Corning, and eventually worked for Corning Community Schools as a custodian for 10 years, retiring in 2001.

John was an active member of Corning Christian Church, serving as an elder, deacon, worship leader and chairman of the board. He was a member of the Corning Volunteer Fire Department, until he retired from the department in 2002 after serving for 43 years, Rotary and a Paul Harris Fellow recipient.

John is survived by his wife Jean; sons, Jack Nevius (Debbie Buffington) of Corning and Jeffrey (Chelsea) Nevius of Clermont, Florida; and daughter Joan (Dan) Flesch of Duluth, Minnesota.

John was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Don and Harold.
