Today is Oct. 18, the 291st day of the year. So, there are 74 days left in 2018. Below are news items from the Creston News Advertiser for this week (Oct. 15-21) in history:

After Creston Cemetery Board purchased an ad in the CNA stating individuals had a short time to remove any excessive decorations from their loved one’s graves at Graceland Cemetery, a heated cemetery board meeting was held with nearly every seat filled. The board said the decorations caused difficulty when trying to mow. Several people expressed a reform for decorating freedom in which they would maintain the grave sites by trimming the grass themselves so they could decorate without restrictions. Mayor Warren Woods proposed a “Friends of Graceland” as plenty of people were willing to volunteer their time to help maintain the cemetery. No decision was made and more suggestions would be considered at the November meeting.

Both landowners and a trail group were seeking an abandoned railroad line. Farmers saw potential farm ground and others supported a proposed bicycle and hiking trail. Local farmers also argued the land would be 99 percent tillable, accident liability was a concern and there wasn’t much to see except corn fields. Crestland Betterment Foundation felt there was strong support for a trail, since a portion of the line was on the route of the Mormon Trail.

It was shoved sideways, hitting two cars parked in front of Berning Cafe, knocking down two parking meters and stopping against the front of Bernings, chipping the stone on the front of the building and pushing the wall in.
