Jean Erskine

Creston

Jean Erskine, 79, of Creston died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at Greater Regional Hospice Home – HCI in Creston.

Celebration of life services will be 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave., in Creston. The Rev. Tony Thurston and the Rev. Jerry Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, south of Creston. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Jean LaRay Erskine, daughter of Hazel Elizabeth (Clark) Lewis and Glen Lewis, was born May 14, 1939, in Panora. After her mother’s death in January 1941, she was adopted later that year by Harold Olin Kindred and Vera Pearl (Jones) Kindred. Jean graduated from Zion High School in 1957 and worked as a telephone operator for GTE.

On April 10, 1958, Jean married James Howard Erskine in Creston. They settled in the Creston area where she worked as a homemaker and also a maid for three different motels in Creston. Additionally, Jean work in a plastics factory, 10 years at Green Valley Butcher Shop, and 10 years with Casey’s sandwich factory, retiring in 1996.

Jean was a member of Mt. Zion Church, Red Hat Society, Southside Boosters and Mountain Man Club, and served as a Girl Scout leader for many years.

Jean is survived by her daughters, Debbie (Charlie) White and Laurie (Greg) Hull, both of Creston and Pamela Erskine (Bernie Etter) of Chariton; son Michael (Rhonda) Erskine of Creston; grandchildren, Erin (David) Peaveler, Chanda (Bill Hahesy) Moreland, Cody and Megan (Nick Standley) Hull, Tyler Erskine, Casey Allison, Christal (Shawn McClellan) Waddingham and Jacob Erskine; 10 great-grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; half-brothers, Jerry (Vernettee) Lewis of Cincinnati, Ohio, Allan (Elsa) Lewis of Cedar Rapids and Ed (Donna) Lewis of Fairland, Oklahoma; and half-sister Charlotte Christe of Klemme.

Jean was preceded in death by her birth parents; adopted parents; parents-in-law, Harold Erskine and Elizabeth Osborne; husband Jim in 2010; grandson Matt White; infant brother Orville Allen Kindred and brother Billie Lewis.
