Independent investigation underway at Southwestern

An investigation into the misuse of financial resources is underway at Southwestern Community College.

According to Dr. Barb Crittenden, president, SWCC has hired Denman and Company as of Oct. 1 to conduct an independent investigation to determine the scope and extent of any losses.

The discovery was made by administrators through internal controls and not as part of their regular annual audit.

“We discovered it, so we took the initiative to engage them to investigate it specifically for us,” said Crittenden.

The findings of the audit, which Crittenden estimates will be complete by the end of the month, will be presented to the board by Denman and Company, and released on the state auditor’s website.

As of now, Crittenden does not have a total on the amount of potential loss or how many employees may be involved.

“The investigation is just underway and we don’t have all the answers,” said Crittenden.

Crittenden said at this time, it is premature to speculate if criminal charges will be pressed, however, if any criminal activity is found, it will be referred to the proper authorities.
