Bridgewater coffee grinder finds a new, local home in Greenfield

When Tom Bingaman ran into a Universal coffee grinder, made in the 1940s, at a garage sale recently in Bridgewater, he knew one person who wouldn't want to let it slip by — Tom Walk of Greenfield.

Bingaman called Walk, an offer was made and a deal was done. Now, that historic coffee grinder that ground coffee in Bridgewater for many, many years will do the same for coffee lovers in Adair County, except now it will do so from Greenfield.

Walk and his wife, Tammy, own The Corner Coffee Shop and Antiques on the Greenfield square. Their finding this coffee grinder is where two of their favorite things collided.

"Tom sent me a picture and asked me what do you think? I said 'Where is it?' and he told me. after talking to Tammy a little about it, I said we'd be honored to own it," Walk said. "It's a pretty old coffee grinder that's been used for quite a few years in our communities. To have that stay locally instead of go somewhere else, that really means a lot to Tammy and I. We have some local pieces in our shop. We just take pride in our community.

"To hear that the owner of the coffee grinder was excited that it was staying in the local community, it's a win-win."

Once the Walks get the coffee grinder cleaned up, they plan to use it to grind coffee. Not only do they serve coffee daily but they also sell ground coffee beans to customers.

"Our goal is to get it all cleaned up, get it running and use it was our grinder in the store," Walk said. "
