Doreen Godden, 80, of Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly of Creston, died April 10, 2018, at Infiniti Hospice in Las Vegas.
Celebration of life memorial graveside services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cromwell. The Rev. Jim McIntosh will officiate. Visitation with family present will follow the service at Congregational United Church of Christ in Cromwell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Congregational United Church of Christ in Cromwell. Online condolences may be left at www.powersfh.com.
Viola Doreen Godden, daughter of Lester H. and Nina Muriel (Young) McDowell, was born Nov. 7, 1937, in Grand River. The family moved to Creston when she was approximately 6 years old. She attended Salem Lutheran Church. Doreen graduated from Creston High School. She moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, after school to work and live with her older sisters.
On Jan. 5, 1958, Doreen married Kenneth Merrill Godden in Creston. Kenny was later stationed in the United States Air Force in San Antonio, Texas, where Doreen joined him. They returned to Creston after Ken was in a car accident. Doreen worked many years for the Creston News Advertiser, along with being a helpmate to Ken as he had a used furniture store and owned and operated K-Gee’s Lounge.
In 1986, Ken and Doreen moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, to be close to her son, Bobby. Later she started working as a secretary for Rossum Reality Real Estate and later at Gordon Leck’s Internet Realty Company. After a health scare in 2010, she retired and moved in with Bobby.
Doreen is survived by her son Robert “Bobby” (Janet) Godden of Las Vegas, Nevada; brother in-law Dallas Tucker of Manteca, California; brother Jack (Connie) McDowell; sister Joyce Burkey of Lincoln, Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews and their families and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Godden; parents, Lester and Muriel McDowell; father- and mother-in-law, Earl and Helen Godden; sisters, Jennie (Harlan) Layton, Betty Tucker, Nina (Ron) Mares, Marlene McDowell and Judy Allen,; brother Jerry (Bonnie) McDowell; brother-in-law Davey A. Burkey and niece Teresa Burkey.
