The ratings are out and Good Samaritan Society of Fontanelle passes with flying colors and is again a Five Star facility.
A rating is released periodically in a program that is in conjunction with Medicare and Medicaid. Most recently, Good Samaritan, still a quality facility, had dropped below the Five-Star distinction, but more recently, they were told they’ve reached that coveted pinnacle once again.
“We have a Nursing Home Compare website with information that [the stars] actually portray,” said Mallory Wheatley, Administrator at GSC. “It’s based off of three different categories.”
The three different categories the star ratings are based upon are health inspections, staffing and quality of resident care measures. Facilities are given ratings in each of those three categories and an overall rating.
“The health inspections looks at whether we’re managing our medication properly, whether we’re protecting the residents from any physical or mental abuse, or if we’re storing and preparing food properly. The staffing is based on the number of registered nurse hours as well as the total hours that we provide for residents,” Wheatley said. “The quality of resident care is based off of our clinical information here at the facility.”
Wheatley says the online systems the Good Samaritan Society uses are constantly fed into. Inspections are also done periodically.
Wheatley, who began her position in May after interim administrator Ben Orneleas moved away, is proud of her staff and the work they’ve all done to make a home for their residents at their facility. There are five gold cardboard stars hanging in the front hallway of the center so that everyone knows Good Samaritan Society is Five-Star.
“It’s certainly a great feeling, but I attribute it to all of them, the good staff we have here at Good Sam,” Wheatley said. “We’ve been celebrating by doing a lot of fun things at the facility. We have five big old gold stars to pat everyone on the back here.”
