Greenfield Fire Department and Adair County Ambulance responded to a single vehicle accident early Thursday afternoon on Lewis Avenue near Greenfield.
The call came through Adair County dispatch at 2:02 p.m. about a vehicle on its top in the 2000 block of Lewis Avenue, approximately 6 miles from Greenfield. Upon arrival, first responders found a 2006 Ford with 60-year-old John William Schmeling of Casey still inside and severely injured. Schmeling died as he was being transported to meet a medical helicopter.
The accident remains under investigation, but preliminary reports suggest Schmeling lost control of his vehicle on the gravel road before it rolled and came to rest on its top.
Iowa State Patrol and the Adair County Medical Examiner assisted with the investigation.
