Mary E. Jones, 86, of Creston, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018, at the Greater Regional Hospice Home – HCI in Creston.

Celebration of Life Memorial Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018, at Powers Funeral Home, 601 New York Ave. in Creston. Pastor Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be private at a later date. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Powers Funeral Home in Creston. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the Creston HCI Hospice Home or others to be determined. Online condolences can be given at www.powersfh.com.

Mary E. (Hazen) Jones, daughter of Aretta V. (Powers) Hazen and Irvin Hiatt Hazen, was born on Jan. 13, 1932, in rural Union County. She was educated in Lincoln Township School #2 and later graduated from Orient High School in 1950. She went on to study at the Creston Junior College and then other courses at University of Iowa. She taught in Ellston and, later, Pacific Junction.

On April 18, 1953, Mary married Lloyd L. Jones in Bethany, Missouri. They first settled and worked out of Glenwood, before moving to Ellston. In 1956, they moved to Afton. Mary taught for two years and next worked for 32 years as a social worker doing investigations for the Iowa Department of Human Services. She retired in 1993. Mary and Lloyd moved to Creston in 1998.

Mary was a member of the Bancroft Society and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid quilter and genealogist.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd of Creston; a son, Jerry (Patti) Jones of Creston; three daughters, Diane Riley of Creston, Linda Preston of Creston, and Donna (Skyler) Criss of D’Iberville, Mississippi; sister, Martha Musmaker of Creston; brother-in-law, Robert Long of Creston; seven grandchildren: Jason (Denise) Riley, Jodi Riley, Sara (Matt) Snitker, Seth Preston, Cory (Bobbie) Preston, Levi (Charlotte) Criss and Josh (Amanda) Criss; 11 great-grandchildren: Ashtyn, Danielle, Cassidy and Alexandria Riley, Solaice Snitker, Lydia Preston, Travis Floyd, Connor, Jonas, Juliet and Lila Criss.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two sons-in-law, Lonny Riley and Wayne Preston; two brothers, Ralph and Hugh Hazen and sister, Ruth R. Long.
