Creston's Phipps wins 5K race in Chicago

Phipps toasts field of 2,000-plus

In a race with 2,006 entries, Creston's own Brandon Phipps thrashed the field for a winning finish in the five kilometer portion of the BTN Big 10 held Sunday in Chicago.

The race began Sunday morning just to the south of the Chicago Bears' Soldier Field and was fully run down a stretch within view of Lake Michigan.

The rising senior Northwest Missouri State Bearcat (cross country and track and field)
stayed with friends in Chicago as well as ran the race with them before outpacing the field.

Not knowing what to expect, Phipps entered the run with an open mind.

Phipps bested the field by 71 seconds, winning in a time of 16:29.

Phipps has been honing his endurance on the roads of Creston this summer, often seen racing around town.

"It was a good prep for the up and coming season," Phipps said. "First time ever racing on the roads so quite a bit different than I’m used to, but awesome to come out with the win for a sweet event. Post college I definitely look forward to getting into the road racing."
