Doris Mitchell, 92, of Afton died Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, at Greater Regional Hospice Home – HCI in Creston.

Celebration of life services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton. The Rev. Jim Morris and the Rev. Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be in Moon Cemetery in rural Macksburg. Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Doris Nadene (Gilbert) Mitchell, daughter of Omer and Irene Downing Gilbert, was born Nov. 10, 1925, in Jackson Township in Guthrie County at her grandparent’s farm. She graduated in 1943 from Panora High School and obtained a degree in normal training. She taught at Dale City country school.

On March 13, 1944, Doris married Washington Irven “Murph” Mitchell in Stuart. They lived on various farms in Guthrie County until moving in 1969 to a farm in Dodge Township of Union County. They sold the farm in 1994, and moved into Afton. Doris worked at Crest Haven Nursing Home and Matilda Gibson Memorial Library in Creston.

Doris is survived by her sons, Jim (Cheryl) Mitchell of Creston, Bob (Karla) Mitchell of Afton and Keith (Karen) Mitchell of Thayer; daughters, Sheryl Mitchell of Creston and Judy McCarthy of Afton; grandchildren, Scott, Jeff, Jamie, Marc, Christy, Amy, Shantel, Shannon, Stacy, Mindy, Melissa, Jeremy, Skip, Lindsay, Wendi, Shawn, Wesley, Dallas and Travis; 46 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; brother Gary (Harriett) Gilbert of Menlo and numerous nieces and nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband Irven in 2002; son Donnie Mitchell; sisters, A. Lorene Sneller, Ruth Short and Jeanette Harwood; and great-grandchildren, Theo Johnsen, Sam Grandfield and Nicole Canine.
