Rich Paulsen - What’s Up

The State Fair has arrived for your viewing pleasure

Today is the start of the 166th Iowa State Fair. It seems like the town always gets pretty quiet during the 10 days of the fair. The number of people from the area that camp up at the fair seems to be increasing every year. I talked to Darwin West and he tells me he has been camping at the State Fair for 45 years.

There are 82 items “on a stick” along with all the other things to eat at the fair. I still get a kick out of the salad on a stick. You can even get Rocky Mountain Oysters at this year’s fair ... if you really want them! I don’t think any of the grandstand shows are sold out yet. I wasn’t real impressed with any of this year’s lineup. In fact the free entertainment seems to have more to offer than the paid acts.

I’ll stop by and check out the butter cow, the big bull and “the big pig” for the fun of it. Check out the Fair, I’m sure it will be good and hot!

Wine Walk

The Wine Walk in Creston was well attended this past weekend. The group sold out all of its tickets and all the walkers seemed to have a great time checking out all the different wines and enjoying all the great food along the way. I’m sure it will become an annual event.

Back alley

The alley repairs in uptown Creston were suppose to start construction in May. We are now up to August and just about nothing has been done. It seems like there is lots of finger pointing as to who is responsible for not getting the project going. This project was announced about three years ago now. You would think they would have the details figured out by now. I suppose it will get started and we will be fighting the snow trying to get it.

This weekend is the annual Best Ball golf tournament out at Crestmoor Golf Course. The tournament is put on by Phil Tyler and awards pork chops as prizes. Go out and take in a little local good golf.

I had a chance to visit the Kansas City Chiefs camp this past week. It looks like the Chiefs should have a good chance to make the playoffs again this year. After practice, I had a chance to see some of the players up close, and boy are there some big boys in those uniforms. The practice facility is at Missouri Western College. There was a good crowd for the practice. Kansas City plays its first preseason game tonight.

I give blood every two months. I get an email telling me where my blood ended up. They tell you that if there is not any local need that it is sent on. The last two times I have given blood it has ended up in Boston and Baltimore. A little part of me is now on the east coast. I’ve been giving blood for a long time and just passed the 14-gallon mark for giving.

The fall sports teams for SWCC are back and practicing. The SWCC volleyball team has its first home game on Sept. 5. There is also this fall cross country, baseball, golf and sports shooting. Go out and support SWCC when you can.
