From Kelsey Hollen
Please take the opportunity to meet candidate Denise O’Brien, running for House District 21. Denise is looking to connect and hear from young professionals and educators who live and work in rural Iowa, specifically District 21 (Adams, Cass and Union counties). Denise wants to hear why you love rural Iowa, but also what challenges you may face in your community or work places to prepare her to better serve our area, if elected. This event will be 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at A&G Pizza Steakhouse and Lounge, in the back room.
O’Brien is a farmer and community volunteer from Atlantic. She has farmed with her husband, Larry Harris, for 42 years. She is a wife, mother and grandmother. Denise and Larry maintain 17 acres of the original Harris farm, five of which are in certified organic fruit and vegetable production incorporating high tunnel production. O’Brien also raises turkeys and chickens for meat and egg production.
Through farming, Denise has had numerous opportunities to work within the agricultural community working on policy development for the state, national and international level and becoming involved in the community of women in agriculture, organic production, local food systems and conservation issues. Denise mentors many women who are the next generation of farmers. In 2012, Denise completed a year assignment with the United States Department of Agriculture as an agriculture adviser in Afghanistan.
Please join me in a conversation to share knowledge about your field of work and our community with a candidate who truly wants to listen!
