Three-Wide Shootout

CORNING – A total of 71 cars hit the dirt on Saturday at the Adams County Speedway for Chat Mobility Night. Five classes participated in racing action. During the intermission, several youngsters participated in the annual Chat Mobility Kids Money Grab. Saturday night also marked the debut of the inaugural McCunn Specialty Firearms Three-Wide Shootout Race of Champions. Six previously qualified drivers from the Chat Mobility Hobby Stock class participated in the event at the end of the night.

Action began with the Stalker Chevrolet B-Modifieds. Kody Havens and Cody Werner nabbed heat race wins. In the feature, Tommy Hensley and Kyle Tanner started on the front row. Werner’s night was plagued with mechanical difficulties that ended his night early while Tanner quickly jumped out to the lead. Josh Sink had his eyes set on Tanner and his third consecutive win, but Tanner had his number three machine dialed in and held off a late-race charge from Sink and Shawn Kralik to nab his second win of the season. Kralik edged Sink at the line for the runner-up spot, while Daniel Baudler and Bryce Allen rounded out the top five.

Last week’s Chat Mobility Hobby Stock feature winner Jerid Lund and two-time defending track champion Luke Ramsey each won their respective heat races on Saturday night. As luck would have it, the two hot-shoes also started on the front. Ramsey took the lead from Lund on the opening lap and held onto it throughout the race. Ramsey took the white-flag and was coming off turn four to take the checkered flag when a spin by Brent Lowe prompted a green-white-checkered restart. Ramsey coolly hit his marks on the restart and grabbed win number six on the season. Lund finished second, Chris Bates third, Tom Myers fourth and David Weeda rounded out the top five.

Defending track champion Joe Zadina won the lone heat race in the Northland Oil Stock Cars. Saturday night’s stock car feature saw the return of the No. 2 Miller Lite car that was driven for many years by the late Kevin Sharp. Sharp’s longtime crew chief Daniel Rehmeyer was tasked with wheeling the machine that he had worked on for many years. Scott Carlson and Johnathan Kinser started on the front row, but Buck Schafroth quickly stole the lead from Carlson. Zadina and Hardisty soon followed Schafroth, but the two veterans spent so much time battling each other that it allowed Schafroth to scoot away for his second win of the season. Hardisty narrowly defeated Zadina for second, Carlson came home in fourth and Kinser rounded out the top five. Rehmeyer wheeled the Miller Lite car to an eighth-place finish.

The Poet Bio-Refining Modified drivers raced with $700 on the line Saturday night. Jeff Wiggins and Kyle Brown won their respective heat races while Wiggins drew the pole for the 17-car main event. Wiggins, fresh off a string of inconsistent runs had his No. 36 Southern Iowa Vending car dialed in. Brown, Wiggins’ chassis builder lurked close behind but the veteran Wiggins showed Brown around ACS en-route to his third win of the season. Wiggins also narrowed Jesse Dennis’ points lead to just 19 points with the win. Dennis took home third, Josh Most rallied from the back of the field to finish fourth and Todd Van Eaton rounded out the top five.

Feature racing concluded on Saturday night with the Tri-State Ford Compacts. The top two in points, Dustin Thompson and Chris Vannausdle each won their respective heat races but it was defending Tradition champion Denny Berghahn Jr. who showed the way around ACS. Berghahn started on the front alongside Vannausdle and quickly took the lead. Berghahn put on a dominant performance to capture his first win of the season at ACS. Vannausdle chipped into Thompson’s points lead with a runner-up finish. Thompson finished third, Colton Garside continued to impress with a fourth-place finish and Luke Ramsey rounded out the top five.

Six drivers: Luke Ramsey, Andy Davison, Jerid Lund, Chris Bates, David Weeda and Tom Myers all participated in the inaugural McCunn Specialty Firearms Three-Wide Shootout Race of Champions. Each driver was paired with a fan and drew for their starting position in the six-lap event with $200 on the line. Bates drew the pole, but it was Weeda who quickly jumped out to the race lead. Weeda held off hard-charges from Lund and Davison, but persevered to take home the $200 payday.

ACS will take a week off next week, but action will resume on July 28 with Tri-State Ford Night. Six Tri-State Ford Compacts will participate in the Three-Wide Shootout; Dustin Thompson, Chris Vannausdle, Buddy Haidsiak, Bobby Key, Tyler Housley and Colton Garside automatically qualified for the event.

Hot laps will begin at 6:30 with racing to follow.
