You’ll get to see all kinds of fair queens and animals in the paper these next couple of weeks. It looks like it is true county fair season with the temps in the 90s and the humidity just as bad. The Union County Fairgrounds has taken on a new look with all the new construction that has been done over the past few months. I’ll miss the good old days of cooking pancakes while the rainwater goes through the food building while you are cooking! The livestock will also have a little more room to roam. So get out and support your local county fair, it is always a good time – maybe a little hot – but a good time.
I had a chance to see my favorite group a week ago up in Minneapolis. The Eagles played at Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins. The opening act was Jimmy Buffet. It was a crazy crowd of about 40,000 people. All the “Parrotheads” associated with Jimmy Buffet were a real “hoot” to watch. There were lots of pink flamingo outfits along with the parrot hats.
The Eagles were as good as ever with the addition of Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of the late Glen Frey. It was amazing to hear 40,000 people singing every song from both groups. I was pretty amazed to see the varying ages of people at the concert. The “kid” sitting next to me was only 21 and he knew every song! Getting around Minneapolis sure was fun with construction going on at every turn. I’m getting use to following the detour signs! Go see the Eagles next time they are in the area; they worth the price of admission.
The sweet corn arrived just in time for the Fourth of July. I was lucky enough to get a couple dozen locally grown sweet corns for all my Fourth of July guests. The corn is real good this year. All the rain and hot weather seems to agree with corn growing. Mr. Gates of Gates Sweet Corn fame tells me he planted about 21,000 kernels of corn this year. So take advantage of the “good stuff” while you can get it.
I had a chance to to try out my fishing skills over the weekend. Even with all the hot weather, the fish were biting well. I caught bass and bluegill until I was tired of catching them. The worms must have been pretty tempting. The bass are still hanging out on the bottom. I couldn’t get them to take my top water lure. Another hot week and I would bet they will start appearing on the top water. Go fish, all the rain has helped the fishing.
It was another great fireworks show at McKinley Park this year. I just wish the city council would make up their minds and let the populace shoot the darn things legally in town. If the towns are greedy enough to take all the tax money for selling the fireworks, they just as well give people a couple of days like July 3 and 4 to shoot them without threat of being fined $625. I give the police department “kudos” for letting people shoot them off without fining everyone. I think that a couple of days to shoot them off would get it out of most people’s system. Even I can only watch so many fireworks go up in flames before I become bored or broke trying to buy them. The majority of people will obey the law, but that is with anything.
Thought for the week: “The two real political parties in America are the Winners and the Losers. The people don’t acknowledge this. They claim membership in two imaginary parties, the Republicans and the Democrats, instead.” – Kurt Vonnegut
