McDermott, Baiting win Creston Greater 8 and 5K races

The first Creston Greater 8 and 5K races took place Tuesday, July 3.

The group previously held a half marathon and 5K near the Fourth of July, but race director Mindy Stalker decided to change the course this year, making it a direct route from Green Valley Lake to McKinley Lake utilizing the recreational trail.

Greater Regional Medical Center joined in this year as title sponsor of the event, which was a blessing to Stalker.

“The biggest change this year really had to do with Greater Regional coming on as a title sponsor,” Stalker said. “It couldn’t have come at a better time because of the heat. I feel like it was probably 20 degrees hotter this year than it had been any other year. Having Greater Regional staff there to spray down with water the runners and offer that post-race stretch was a huge addition.”

Nineteen competitors braved 90-plus degree heat on July 3 to run the 8-mile race, while 50 crossed the finish line in the 5K.

Casey McDermott of Grinnell, daughter of Creston Community School District Superintendent Steve McDermott and Drake University women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase record holder, won the 8-mile race with her time of 53 minutes, 37.3 seconds.

Dave Baitinger of Ogden took the top spot in the 5K race, running 19:30.6.

The top male and female finisher in the 8-mile race each received $200 in prize money, as well as a pair of sunglasses donated by Precision Optical. Second- and third-place male and female finishers in the 8-mile race received $100 and $75 each, respectively.

The top male and female finisher in the 5K race received $50 in prize money with sunglasses donated by Precision Optical, while second- and third-place finishers received $35 and $25, respectively.

All of the money generated from entry fees goes directly back to the trail system.

Money from previous years of the race has been used to purchase a water fountain along the trail, which led to Greater Regional Medical Center, Southwestern Community College and Creston CWC all pitching in to add and maintain other water fountains along the trail.

“I was extremely impressed, especially with the heat, that many people showed up,” Stalker said. “We raised a bit over $2,500 for the trails. We are looking into doing a fairly large project still this year with the race funding.”
