Dave Tackett

Creston

Dave Tackett, 65, of Creston passed away Thursday, July 5, 2018, in Leeds, Utah. He was born May 6, 1953, in Creston. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Rose and his other grandparents; his parents Bob and Dorthea; his brother Bob Tackett and sister Peggy Anderson.

Dave is survived by his daughter Becky (Sergio) Montiel; one grandson Nate; son Gabe (Kim) Tackett; four grandchildren Ava, Oli, Jonah and Micah; one brother Steve and his partner (Dan) Tackett; cousin Fred (Donna) Taylor; numerous extended family, cousins, nieces and nephews; two in-laws, Mike Anderson and Mary Tackett; many friends and his beloved dog Rosie.

Dave grew up on a farm, and when Dave was 8, his brother was 11 and cousin Fred was 10, the three of them would play baseball. One hitting, one pitching and one fielding. One fall afternoon after school, they played three-person football, two of them tackling whoever had the ball. It would have been easy for 8-year-old Dave to tell a couple of older, bigger guys he wasn’t going to play, but he never did. And they never cut him any slack because he was younger and smaller. Dave went on to pitch for the Farmers Co-Op team in the Creston Pee Wee League. He was an excellent running back on the high school football team, where he also excelled at wrestling. Dave often said he only went to high school so he could play sports.

After high school, Dave’s first job was with Bonanza Builders, where he worked himself up to foreman. He started driving a truck with his dad Bob Sr. After Bob Sr. became ill in the late 1970s, Dave drove for other trucking companies and had his own trucking company for several years. His children enjoyed numerous summer vacations on the road with him. Dave was driving for Waymore Trucking Company at the time of his death. The nation’s highways are quieter and more mournful with Dave gone. We miss his stories, his spirit and his ability to overcome the many challenges that came his way. Dave was one of a kind and his passing leaves a void that is impossible to replace.

A celebration of life will be held 5 p.m. Monday, July 16, at A&G Restaurant and Lounge, 209 W. Adams St., in Creston. In lieu of flowers, his family would like written stories for a memory book. Memorials should be sent to Becky Montiel, 9556 Schuline Road, Sparta, IL 62286 for final expenses and causes important to Dave. The family has asked that attendees dress festive and to not wear black.
