Get ready for a ‘toasty’ Fourth of July

We’ve had a good week of rains and storms but now it looks like we will be back to the hot and humid summer us Iowans are used to. At least all the rain will help keep the fire danger down with all the fireworks that will be shot over the next few days.

I hear the parade will have quite a few tractors this year along with the tractors being shown out at McKinley Park in the afternoon. There are several new events this year with several games, canoe races and inflatables in the park. I would guess a lot of people don’t have the Thursday after the Fourth of July off, so it should be a big local crowd for the Fourth. I always enjoy the fireworks show at McKinley Park. The local shooters group does a terrific job of putting on the show. I hear there will be some ground fountains at this years presentation.

Great bands

I’ve had the pleasure to be at all 12 Party in the Parks over the years. The three bands and Dustin Baird did a terrific job last Saturday.

All the bands had some local folks that played in them. I’ve heard nothing but good comments on the concert. On top of that, I had a chance to meet and talk with all the performers. What a great bunch of people. No big heads, no egos overflowing. Just plain good people. Believe me, not all the folks over the years could fit that description.

Next year

Next year, Creston will be celebrating its 150th year of existence. There is a committee already working on putting together some fun events in order to celebrate the event. If you have any thoughts or ideas on something to do, please contact Ellen at the Creston Chamber of Commerce. Some of the ideas are already getting put into play and planned. So put on your thinking cap and come up with a good fun idea!

It’s kind of interesting, Wednesday we had a mini drop in gas price. From 4 to 6 p.m., many of the local stations dropped their gas prices about 20 cents per gallon. There was a good line at the FS station on Highway 34 when the price decrease took effect. I’m all in favor of those kind of nice surprises.

Getting there

I’m still working on my weight situation. I reported in for my five-month check the other day and have lost 77 pounds off my frame.

I feel good and do my daily regimen of vitamins to keep me upright. I keep on my exercise schedule and continue to eat much better than I did for the first 90 percent of my life. I know several people who are getting ready for the procedure. They won’t regret it.

There are a ton of movies that have either opened in the last week or will open in the coming week. The “Jurassic World” movie showing at the Strand in Creston is getting good reviews. “The Incredibles” is also getting super reviews and should be here soon. I’m looking forward to “Antman and the Wasp” that opens up July 6. So take a break from the hot weather and take in a movie at your local theatre. There’s nothing better than a little air conditioning on a 95 degree day. A reminder that the summer kids movies will start July 11 in Creston. There are free tickets at 41 local sponsors for the kids.
