1 dead in Highway 34 crash

One person died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 34 and South Poplar Street in Creston.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Afton Nicole Staton, 17, of West Des Moines, driving a 2006 Pontiac, was attempting to make a left turn from South Poplar Street onto Highway 34 when she failed to yield to Kylee Olivia Short-Edwards, 25, of Afton, who was westbound on Highway 34 in a 2006 Dodge.

Staton was wearing a seatbelt, but died as a result of her injuries. Rebekah Berlyn Terlizzi, 17, of Creston, a passenger in Staton’s car, was also wearing a seatbelt and was transported to Greater Regional Medical Center by ground ambulance with minor injuries.

Short-Edwards was uninjured in the crash.

Assisting the Iowa State Patrol in the investigation were Creston Police Department, Union County Sheriff, Creston Fire Department and Greater Regional Medical Center EMTs.

The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
