Fontanelle celebrates Fourth of July

FONTANELLE – Fontanelle will be the place to be July 3 and 4 when the town hosts its traditional Fourth of July celebration, hosted by the Fontanelle Enterprise Club.

The fun begins 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, with the annual slab supper under the big tent on the square. Proceeds go to Fontanelle Enterprise Club to fund civic activities and maintain the skating slab.

The evening will also mark the opening of the slab, with skating starting at 7 p.m. Other activities for the night include a “Find Your Hero” scavenger hunt from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fontanelle Public Library and a beer garden by Wreckers or Checkers Bar with stage entertainment by Ted Stockton. A bags tournament begins at 7 p.m. with registration at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per team with a 100 percent payout.

Wednesday, July 4, begins with the Adair County Historical Society tractor ride and Mass in the Park with Father James. The parade begins at 11 a.m. with the theme “Freedom for Heroes.” Fontanelle hero, Ray Stewart, will serve as grand marshal for the parade.

Food and other concessions open after the parade on the Fontanelle Square, along with kids games, an ice cream social, ag adventures and bounce bubble balls. Black Dirt Conspiracy takes the bandstand stage at 1 p.m., followed by the Mr. and Mrs. Fontanelle contest.

Other activities throughout the afternoon include kids games and face painting, bounce house, kiddie tractor pull, water fights, pie eating and watermelon seed spitting contests, dodge ball tournament, bed races, frog hopping contest and five-gallon bucket races.

The Wreckers or Checkers Bar beer garden reopens at 4 p.m. with Just Jammin’ Band taking the stage. Fireworks are scheduled for dark, approximately 10 p.m.
