This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. It may not be the true start of summer, but the forecast says summer is upon us! It looks like it will be near or over 90 degrees for the next week or so. Not what most of us were looking for. It seems like we have only had about two weeks of spring since the snow finally gave up. Now we are headed straight into summer. This corner of the state is in the moderate drought phase. Many of the lakes and ponds in the area need a good three or four large downpours to get back up to full.
The casino boat over in Osceola looks like it is about to hit bottom with the lake down several feet over the past few months. The campers will be out in full force this weekend. The fishermen will also be out filling up their creels. So go out and enjoy the weekend ... summer will be over before you know it!
I finally had a chance to hit one of the local ponds this past week. Boy are the fish up and biting. The fish were biting just about anything you throw at them. I had a great time throwing out a floating worm and watching the fish attack it. I must have caught about 40 fish in less than two hours. Bluegill, perch and some nice bass. The 3 to 4 pound bass had a lot of fight in them. Get out and fish – this is the perfect time for it.
There are several Iowa companies that have special anniversaries this year. Casey’s turns 50 this year. It is noted for its gas stations and pizza. It will be interesting to see what they do with the new land they bought on Highway 25. Casey’s bought the old ISSB drive-in bank. Maybe a new “shiny” Casey’s someday. Also, Fareway turns 80 years old this year. Fareway’s hometown is Boone, where I once lived. The store is noted for its meat department. Also, this weekend here in Creston is Bomgaars’ grand opening. The former Farm & Home location is where you will find this new business.
Just a reminder that you can now vote. If you wish to wait until “Voting Day,” which is June 5, you have a few days to think about who you would vote for. I think the most interesting race will be the Democratic winner who will run for governor against Kim Reynolds.
Alliant has told us that construction on the downtown alley behind the CNA will begin next week. The work will proceed to the east throughout the summer. So be prepared to have to make some detours once in a while. The project will take up most of the summer. The buried lines will be a good deal for all of us. Those big metal “goalposts” that guard the alleys should have went away a long time ago.
People ask how I’m doing on my weight loss “adventure.” It’s been about four months from my surgery and I am down 70 pounds. I appreciate everyone who has helped cheer me on. Folks have been nice enough to make positive comments. I’ve been a “short fat guy my whole life.” I will never be Twiggy, but as long as I keep up with the exercise and eating right I should be able to shed enough pounds to be a “regular sized person” again!
It’s kind of astounding to me the number of people that are opting for the surgery and a shot at getting into shape. The new lifestyle has helped me keep my diabetes at bay without drugs. Here’s hoping everyone else has a fun, safe and healthy Memorial Day weekend.
