Glenwood defeats Creston 5-1

GLENWOOD – Even though Creston was able to outhit Glenwood 6-5, the Panthers fell 5-1 to the Rams Tuesday on the road.

The difference was Glenwood’s ability to string together timely hitting, resulting in three runs crossing the plate in the fifth, essentially sealing the game up.

The rally started after a fly ball deflected off a Panther glove.

“I thought we stepped up a little bit tonight and played better. We knew we were going to have to. Our focus was pretty good,” said head coach Mike McCabe. “We probably gave them a couple of extra outs that cost us, but I thought all in all we played pretty good defense.”

After Creston fell behind 1-0 in the second inning, the Panthers tied it in the third thanks to a Chloe Hagle double, scoring Brielle Baker after she mashed a leadoff triple.

Creston had runners on second and third with one out, but Kylee LaMasters struck out and Saige Rice followed with a rocket to the second baseman that was caught.

The Panthers stranded two more runners on base in their half of the fifth.

Defensively, a miscue allowed Glenwood to regain the lead in the fourth inning on a pitch that went to the backstop.

LaMasters pitched a quality game, according to McCabe who thought a few small breaks were the difference in the outcome.

“I thought we played pretty good defensively behind her,” said McCabe. “For us our margin of errors is kind of small right now.”

JV falls

The JV softball team defeated the Rams 6-2.

The JV defeated Southwest Valley 14-8 Monday to start the season with a win. The Panthers piled up eight hits.

Emma Hanson had a triple and a double, Gracie Hagle also had a double and a triple and got the pitching with with six strikeouts.

Sam Dunphy added a triple of her own.

UP NEXT – Creston (1-1, 0-1) will host Lewis Central in a doubleheader Thursday, starting at 5:30 p.m.
