Today is May 24, the 144th day of the year. So, there are 221 days left in 2018. Below are news items from the Creston News Advertiser for this week (May 21-27) in history:

Union County Engineer Scott Nixon read a letter of resignation effective June 25 during the board of supervisors meeting. He had accepted a position with Iowa Department of Transportation as resident construction engineer in the Creston office.

John Porter, chaplain for the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club, and Iowa Rep. Clel Baudler spoke at the dedication ceremony of the 10th mural on the Freedom Rock by Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II. Sorensen had been escorted by dozens of Patriotic Guard Riders and other motorcyclists to the event, north of Greenfield.

The 2008 Orient-Macksburg FFA Environthon team placed third at the state contest as the highest-ranking team in the FFA division. They were judged on knowledge of aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and an oral environmental presentation. Members Jake Waddingham, Alex Maeder, Tucker Mittag, Matt Carr and Kenton Ford, along with Coach Merlyn Brown, went on to the national convention in Indiana.

Creston’s girls track team qualified six members to state in five events. There were Michelle Clausen, Erin McKee, Casee Piel, Jessica Beving, and four-time state qualifiers, Cathy Kister and Elisa Hutchinson.

Winds estimated at 60 to 75 mph left a trail of destruction in Union County. A camper was blown over at Green Valley State Park, trees and power lines were knocked down throughout the county and several farm buildings were destroyed. A hog building belonging to Rich Downing north of Creston was destroyed and three other buildings sustained roof damage. On a Century Farm at Russell Selim’s farm, a barn was turned into a pile of rubble.

The top 10 percent of graduates maintaining the highest GPA among the 130 CHS students class of 1998 were Mike Mansour, Alex Bolinger, Abby Conover, Erica Driskell, Kim Smith, Brittney Bergstrom, Amanda James, Bethany Waltersdorf, Adam Snodgrass, Trista Ide, Erin McKee, Cathy Kister, Jessica Moeller and Josh Flowers.

50 years ago

Burton R. Jones Junior High School industrial arts class won a first place plaque in the seventh annual industrial arts fair in Cedar Falls for sheet metal tool trays produced by the ninth-grade class. In the class were Mike Veitz, Craig Coen, Kevin Kafka, Gary Swan, Gary Stevens, George Kuhns, Benny Taylor, Clint Steele, David Collings, Dennis Allen, Joe Tepley, Dennis Fitzgerald and Ernest Moestchen.

Edwin Ritter of Creston won third place in the district 19 Iowa State speech contest of Toastmasters International at Muscatine. He spoke on “It’s Okay, Or is it?” He had qualified by winning the Creston club contest and the area contest.

Becky Faber of Creston, Sharon Grout of Lorimor, Maureen Scanlan of Corning, Greg Sweet of Arispe and Steve McCann of Creston were the first 1967-68 SWCC freshmen to be inducted into the Titan Honor Society after being selected by the faculty and Titans.

Mike Duckworth of Mount Ayr appeared in racing scenes in the motion picture, “Fever Heat,” which was produced in Iowa the previous summer. He drove his bright yellow 1955 Chevrolet with a 327 motor in scenes shot at Stuart Speedway, on a high-banked quarter mile clay track.
