Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library met May 21 with the following people present: Starr Cure, Judy Hoakison, Bunny Norton, Kay Raymond, Julie Schieffer, Ann Coulter, David Hargrove and Caprial Norton, student representative.

Hargrove announced several donations were received from South Central Iowa Community Foundation. Graphic displays will replace the present wooden sign on the lawn to reflect our logo “Building on our Legacy.” The summer reading program will begin soon. The capital campaign wine walk will be Friday, Aug. 3.

The July 4 sign-up sheet was distributed for the Scholastic Book sale.

The used books sale will be over Balloon Days, Sept. 21-22.

Norton will become the FOL social media coordinator.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. June 18 at the library.

Elzevir Reading Circle

The last meeting of the year for GFWC Elzevir Reading Circle was held May 11. One guest joined the group as they traveled to Greenfield for lunch at The Corner.

Following a nice lunch, President Linda Topliff opened the meeting with a quote from Mark Twain, “Be careful about reading health books – you may die of a misprint.”

Roll call was answered by telling of each member’s summer plans. The secretary read the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved as read. The treasurer reported no change in the balance. A book has been purchased to be given to the library in memory of honorary member Kay Ritter.

A letter from Peg Anderson, SW District director was read. SW district read the most books with a total of 4,778. Elzevir received an award for participating in the Adventures in Reading project as a 100 percent reading club. The theme for 2018-20 will be “Bridging the Gaps.” State service projects are providing vests for Retrieving Freedom dogs, making toiletry kits for domestic violence and homeless people and providing funds for the Iowa lodge – a place in Iowa City for cancer patients and their families to stay while they are receiving treatment. The group will continue to recycle pill bottles.

Items to be displayed in the kitchen at the Historical Complex that Elzevir will decorate during Christmas were discussed. The group could meet at the house and the Historical Society would give the program. Possible donations of socks, nightgowns, furniture and lamps etc. for another project were tabled until the fall meeting.

Members signed up for next year’s meetings and programs. The first meeting will be Sept. 14 at the home of Angela Pullen. Mary Stewart’s Club Collect was recited. Alice Bowers moved to adjourn the meeting. Pullen seconded it and the motion passed. The group spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the stores around the Greenfield square before returning to Creston.

Mary Circle

Mary Circle of First Christian Church met May 17 at the home of Florence Willets. There were nine members present.

Joyce Burkhead read the minutes of the last meeting. Barb gave the treasurer’s report. Both were approved as read.

There was no old business. New business included the coffee fellowship May 20 with seniors honored for graduation. At 11:30 a.m. June 7, the meeting will be at the Windrow. Installation of officers will be June 21 with Rebecca Circle in charge.

Beulah made a notion to adjourn and Alice seconded it.

President Fils closed the meeting with the disciple women’s benediction.

Burkhead had the lesson on Sarah and Ishmael from Genesis. Refreshments were served.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met May 23. Canasta winners were Wanda Nash, first; Sheri Parrott, second; and Barb Bills, third.

Rose Blakesley won the door prize.

Janet Kessler will host cards and chatter Wednesday, May 30.
