Kaleb Evans was a two-time state champion wrestler, an all-stater in football and baseball, and participated in the state finals of three sports during his high school career. He was named Outstanding Male Athlete of the CHS senior class in an awards ceremony. Evans had spent only two years at CHS after his family moved to Creston from Lenox.

The city of Afton had to decide whether to maintain utility costs under their control or sell to a company after longtime contract electrician Keith Brown resigned to pursue another job. Representatives from several energy companies, including Southern Iowa Rural Electric Co-op, Alliant Energy and Resale Power Group of Iowa, pled their case before the public and the city council.

Nodaway Valley Schools had to delay school two hours after discovering seven of their school buses had been vandalized during the night. The air had been let out of the tires, but were not punctured. It was the last day of school for seniors to come to class.

Creston was named one of five 2008 Project Mainstreet winners sponsored by KCCI, Casey’s, Dr. Pepper and Iowa Telecom. Creston planned to use the $3,000 to create a memorial garden.

Valedictorians of the CHS class of 2008 were Anna Clark, Courtney Ekeler and Betsy Johnson. Salutatorian was Jared Johnson.

Air Stalker, race horse owned by Don and Sharen Downing of Orient, won a race at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino that earned them a $15,802 purse.

Frank Sinatra, romantic balladeer of American popular music and “chairman of the board” to millions of fans, died May 14, 1998, of a heart attack at the age of 82 in Los Angeles, California.

Twenty-two Creston High School band members were selected for the Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band and would perform in the Iowa State Fair parade in August. Representatives from more than 50 southwest Iowa schools auditioned to form a 250-piece marching band. CHS junior Jen Fiala was selected as drum major and was the first student from CHS to be given this honor.

A crowd of about 25 overflowed the Union County Broad of Supervisors board room representing Platte Township church and other area residents to air complaints about a proposed 5,000-plus head hog confinement southeast of Kent. Ten speakers voiced their concerns about prevailing winds, additional cost of road maintenance and other issues.

Kasey Downing of Creston was on his first day of the job of hauling treated sludge from the Creston’s wastewater treatment plant to farm fields, when the slurry wagon he was pulling overturned on Cottonwood Street. Approximately 8,000 gallons of sludge was spilled in the accident.

Jessica Moeller and Casee Piel were named outstanding female athletes and Mike Mansour and Conor Reed were named outstanding male athletes for the class of 1998.

50 years ago

Lynda Winter and Gregg Jeffryes, voted by their senior classmates at the most representative girl and boy of the class, led the grand march at the junior-senior prom.

Three people were hospitalized with injuries suffered in a chain reaction of accidents on Highway 25, about five miles north of Creston. Five others were treated at Greater Community Hospital and were released. The accidents involved six autos and two trucks, and occurred when visibility was obscured to near zero by dust blown by extremely strong winds.
