From Connie Maxson – Trustee, Gibson Memorial Library
If you haven’t visited Gibson Memorial Library in a while, you should be aware our library is an effective platform for digital media services. Our public computers receive more than 10,000 visits per year, and we are the only public place in Union County where these services are available.
The Creston Friends of the Library is our volunteer organization which supports our library with revenue from their fundraisers, and helps with front desk checkout activities and shelving materials.
Our adult programming is active and diverse, but our summer reading programs for children and young adults are our best attended activities. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock,” which the library kicks off June 6 with an afternoon of live music.
Our new materials are up-to-date, and we utilize the State of Iowa Libraries Online system for interlibrary loan. We also support a digital audio/ebooks platform called BRIDGES through which you can check out materials for all your smart devices.
We work with Iowa State University Extension Service, Iowa Arts Council, Union County Genealogical Society, DNR and many other community groups when activities and programming is available.
A group of retired gentlemen meets daily in the library for coffee and conversation. Our “Coffee Guys” are generous in their support and have contributed thousands of dollars for technology support for the library. These are just a few of the activities and programs to be found at the library.
However, we are compromised by space limitations and aging structures. Just suppose we could double the physical space in the library. We could transform what is now a warehouse for books and materials into a place where people can gather, share ideas and explore. We could be the destination for all students to support their education, and for families to gather for fun and learning.
We want to develop a culture of creating as opposed to consuming. Just imagine space to create and edit video that might support the development of advertising for local businesses, or create circuit boards for a STEM class in science.
Please support our capital campaign for the library so we can provide a more stimulating space for living and learning in Creston.
