Panthers see quality competition in Carlisle

CARLISLE – The Creston boys track and field team went into Carlisle, facing some of the toughest competition they’ve faced all year, but found some signs of life.

Michael Scherer cleared 5 feet, 10 inches in the high jump, continuing to improve his marks in each meet this season. Scherer also didn’t mis a single leap until the bar was set at 6 feet.

“(Scherer) keeps improving,” said head coach Pat Schlapia. “He really had a rhythm going!”

The clearance was good enough for fifth place out of 15 varsity competitors.

The first-time track and field athlete didn’t stop there, setting a new season best in the 100 and 200 meter dashes.

Keagan Smith recorded a season best in both shot put and discus with marks of 36-10 and 86-6, respectively.

Jackson Kinsella set a new bar for himself in the long jump, hitting 14-6, a new season best.

Cael Kralik also topped his best times of the season in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, grabbing eighth place in both events.

“We saw some improvements in some of our events. We really need to step up both physically and mentally,” said Schlapia.

Overall, Schlapia thought the meet gave the Panthers a good look and some of the best competition around, while giving his team an opportunity to see what it takes to qualify for the Drake Relays.

“Many teams individuals and relays will be competing later this week at Drake Relays,” said Schlapia. “This is the only way to get better, is to go against this type of competition!”

UP NEXT – Creston heads to Red Oak Friday where they are set to start at 5 p.m.
