Fields' Day

DENISON – Kelsey Fields bested her shot put throw by over a foot Thursday in Denison.

Fields’ toss of 38 feet and 3.5 inches shattered her previous best and quickly caught the attention of assistant coach Maggie Arnold who knew she was looking to set a personal record.

“She really put an emphasis on PR’ing but it also took gold so you can’t complain about that,” said Arnold.

The warm weather helped the Panther girls earn a third place finish behind Denison-Schleswig and Atlantic.

Brielle Baker took home golds in both the 800 and 1,500 meter run, setting seasonal bests in both events as well.

Arnold noted that Baker ran the 1,500 fairly uncontested after the first 300 meters.

“She looked so strong after the first 300 meters and she was just untouched,” said Arnold.

Morgan Buxton crossed the line in fourth in the 1,500.

MaKenna Hudson once again helped the Panthers chase down their opponents in the 4x200 and 4x400, guiding Creston to second place finishes in both events.

Stephanie Hemsworth, Kiersten Latham and Baker were also a part of the 4x400 team whose finish came down to a split second.

“MaKenna Hudson actually came from behind and caught a girl from Atlantic. … So it really did come down to a photo finish there,” said Arnold.

Fields also took gold in the discus with a toss of 114 feet, 7 inches, but the throw wasn’t enough to place her in a second Drake Relay event.

Ali Christensen set a new PR in the 3,000 with a third place finish in a time of 12:49.41. The time was 19 seconds better than her previous best.

Creston’s shuttle hurdle team also shaved off two seconds for its best time of the season, good enough for sixth. The distance and sprint medleys finished second and third, respectively.
