DAR

Nine members of the Nancy McKay Harsh Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, met Saturday, April 14, at Summit House in Creston. Regent Jane Briley conducted the business meeting. Hostesses were Jan Morgan and Darlene Morgan.

Chaplain Connie Kinkade conducted a memorial service for DAR member Clarice Minnick who died March 20. Clarice had been a member since April 13, 1991, and had served many years as chapter treasurer.

Following the DAR rituals, Jan Morgan presented the president general’s message. Connie Kinkade gave the national defense moment. Committee reports were as follows: American Indian moment - Briley; commemorative events - Connie Kinkade; conservation moment - Suzanne Adkisson; constitution moment - Rosalie O’Grady; flag moment - Bonnie Riepe; women’s issues - Darlene Morgan and women in Iowa - Pam Marvin.

The upcoming state conference April 26-28 in Ames was discussed. Five members will attend.

Jan Morgan presented the 2018-19 slate of nominees for chapters officers: Janelle Morgan, regent; Adkisson, vice regent; Lynne Schlaht, secretary; Riepe, treasurer; Connie Kinkade, chaplain, Marjorie Kinkade, registrar; and Elaine Brown, historian. Connie Kinkade and Schlaht have volunteered to be co-chairs of the 2018 Memorial Day program.

Marvin gave the program on “WW I Nurse.” She shared excerpts from her Great-Aunt Anne’s memoir which Anne had written during WW II. Anne wrote of the experiences in WW I as a nurse serving in France. Members answered roll call by sharing their WW I ancestor.

Connie Kinkade gave the closing prayer.

The next meeting will be Saturday, May 12, at Summit House. The program will honor the chapter’s contest winners. Hostesses will be Elaine Brown, Rhonda Oliphant and Connie Kinkade. Roll call will be ideas for next year’s programs.

Any woman 18 years of age or older who has an ancestor who was a patriot in the Revolutionary War is eligible to join DAR and would be welcome at our meetings. Contact Briley, regent, or Marjorie Kinkade, registrar, for more information.

Elzevir Reading Circle

GFWC/Elzevir Reading Circle met 12:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, at the Pizza Ranch. Following lunch, President Linda Topliff called the meeting to order with a quote from Albert Einstein, “A person who never made a mistake, never tried anything new.”

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The treasurer’s reported no change from last month. There will be no change in the officers for the coming year. Mary Burg moved for Topliff to continue as president and Terry Ammon to continue as treasurer. Motion was seconded and passed. The information will be forwarded to GFWC.

Mary Stewart’s Club Collect was recited. The next meeting will be May 11. The group will meet 11:30 a.m. at First Christian Church to carpool to Greenfield.

Some of the members then attended the library’s tea time with Joy Johnson, author of “The BOOB Girls” series of books.

Crest Area for Life

Crest Area for LIFE met 7 p.m. March 27 at the Holy Spirit Parish Hall. President Terry Madison opened the meeting with the Right to Life Prayer.

Meg Crawford gave the secretary’s report and it was approved. June Huewe gave the treasurer’s report and it was approved.

Velma Riegel gave the new baby report – she sent out four congratulatory letters. It was noted more people are reporting the births in the newspaper.

Political report: The fetal heartbeat bill was passed in the Iowa Senate. Members need to thank those who voted for it and encourage the Representatives to support the bill in the House.

Also noted that Cardinal Dolan wrote an editorial in the Wall Street Journal entitled “Democrats Have Abandoned Catholics.”

Old business: Members were reminded the fundraising banquets for the LC Clinic will be held May 3 in Creston and May 10 in Stuart. All encouraged to attend. There will be speakers and presentations. It was mentioned the diaper drive is ongoing and the baby bottle boomerang will be done in May near Mother’s Day. This is a program which encourages churches or individuals to distribute baby bottle banks for people to fill with donations for the LC Clinic.

New business: The group will sponsor Mother’s Day ads in the Creston and Afton newspapers. Terry and Rich Madison will arrange for the ads.

Huewe pointed out an article in the “The Vision,” a newsletter of Innervisions Healthcare, that tells about a new study on the effects of abortion on women and families. There was also an editorial in the March 25 Des Moines Register entitled, “Millennials don’t buy pro-abortion talk,” written by Joel Kurtinitis that speaks to the idea the worn out pro-choice talking points are falling flat with millennial voters. He states that “we are not stupid,” and he makes some pretty compelling arguments to back up his statements. It is recommended reading.

The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m. and the next meeting will be 7 p.m. April 24 at the Holy Spirit Parish Hall.

Friends of the Library

Friends of the Library met April 16 at the library. The following new board members were welcomed: Keirnan Norton, Chelsey Sorensen and Caprial Norton, student representative. Other board members present were Jessica Duncan, Judy Hoakison, Marisue Lewis, Bunny Norton, Kay Raymond, Julie Schieffer, Barbara Thomsen, Ann Coulter and David Hargrove.

The minutes were approved as written.

Coulter informed the board the Capital Campaign Committee is planning an uptown Wine Walk on Aug. 3.

Hargrove said the National Library Week turned into a good one. The summer reading program theme is “Libraries Rock” and will begin June 4, with a kick-off party June 6.

A thank you note was received from the Capital Campaign Committee for the members help with the St. Patrick’s Day event.

FOL is on track with the Fourth of July Scholastic Book Fair. Worksheets will be ready for sign up at the next meeting.

The next meeting will be 6 p.m. May 21 at the library.

Beta Kappa

Beta Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International met the morning of April 7 at Winterset Public Library with nine members present.

Karen Tussey presented the suggested revisions to the chapter’s rules, which the members voted to accept. President Julie Derby read the membership recommendation of Martha Ray. The membership voted to extend an invitation to Ray to become a member of Beta Kappa.

The nominations committee presented the slate of officers for 2018-20. The following slate was accepted: President Tussey, First Vice-President Connie Nielsen, Second Vice-President Diane Burgmaier, Recording Secretary Deb Lilly and Corresponding Secretary Derby. The nominations committee for 2018-20 will be Deb Bauer, Lois Frederick and Laura Bennett.

Members were reminded to turn in their Educational Excellence Award nominations to Robyn Ploeger.

Grant-in-aid applications are due by April 18. Members applying for scholarships should have them turned in by April 15. Lois Frederick gave the members a quick tutorial about how the DKG pin is to be worn.

The chapter received a $100 mini-grant from the state, which will be used for our Books Have “Class” project. Members should turn in bits of advice to Bauer as soon as possible. Updated biography sheets were turned in by members. The chapter completed the State Expansion Committee survey. Derby reminded the members the state’s newsletter is now on Upsilon State’s website. The reservation form for the state convention can also be found there.

The program titled, “Planting a Seed,” provided excellent tips for container gardening and raising long-lasting flowers. At the end of the meeting, cookie trays were prepared for the teacher workrooms at the area schools of Winterset, Earlham, Orient-Macksburg and Nodaway Valley.

The next meeting will be Friday, June 15, at the Henry A. Wallace Center. The executive board will meet at 8:45 a.m., followed by the regular meeting at 9 a.m. and lunch at 11 a.m. On the agenda will be installation of new officers, program planning, Upsilon convention report and initiation of new members.

Beta Sigma Phi

Iowa Alpha Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi gathered for their first meeting of the season Thursday evening, April 12, at the home of Dorothy Eyberg in Arispe with all members present. Following the opening ritual, roll call was answered by each member describing how she can tell when spring has arrived.

Following the treasurer’s report by Patricia Fils, communications received by President Loretta Kelly, Vice President Marilyn Larimore and Secretary Norma Putnam were reviewed and discussed. The recipients will respond with the decisions of the group. The president collected information for the new year book, and there was a brief discussion of possible summer activities.

At the close of the business meeting, Kelly gave the program outlining various plans and suggestions for getting and staying healthy. She discussed basic nutrition, the foods that best supply our needs and how to shop wisely for them. She also stated the need for restful sleep and exercise, and gave suggestions for relieving stress and developing a pattern for good rest.

Following the closing ritual, the hostess served delicious refreshments and the group enjoyed visiting.

CARSPA

Creston Area Retired School Personnel Association (CARSPA) held its regular meeting April 10 in the Del Richardson Conference Room at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston. Their tour of Mt. Pisgah by Bob Brown was postponed due to the cold weather.

Following breakfast, the business meeting was conducted. Review and amendment of the bylaws of the group’s Constitution was continued. Everyone was encouraged to attend the District IV meeting May 15 in Council Bluffs. Possible presenters for the 2018-19 calendar year were discussed. A sum of $14 was collected and donated to Lenox Elementary School for the purchase of extra Kleenex tissues.

On May 8, Jim Mowrer will present a program about Camp Sunnyside.

Kent Dinner Club met April 12 with seven attending at the Pizza Ranch.

The next meeting will be 5 p.m. May 10 at Pizza Ranch.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met April 18.

Canasta winners were Barb Bills, first; Linda Clark, second; and Mary Kline, third.

Cheri Lilly won the door prize.

Sherri and Penni will host cards and chatter Wednesday, April 25.
