Rich Paulsen - What’s Up

Always a quiet week during spring break

It’s been spring break around Creston this week with both the Creston schools and SWCC off on spring break. I know a number of folks headed over to Danville, Illinois, to take in the SWCC men’s basketball team at the national championship tournament. I heard that many people have headed south for the week to take in a little warmth. It does seem like there are more people sticking around town during the break. I’ve heard of a number of people doing “staycations” in the area.

This year’s NCAA tournament is not even over yet and they are already selling tickets for the event in Des Moines next March. It looks like the tickets are going pretty fast. All the presale $300 session tickets are sold and they are working on the 200 level tickets already. Seems like the tournament will sell out much like the last time it was here. I understand the tickets for the Omaha sessions this week are going for around $200-600 per ticket!

The Midwest (KC, Omaha and Des Moines) seems to have great attendance every year for the tournament. Maybe we’ll get to see Iowa or Iowa State with a “home” court appearance next year.

This Sunday is Palm Sunday, which is followed by Good Friday and Easter gets top billing on April 1 over April Fools Day. I will have a house full for the Easter weekend. Lots of kids to have an Easter Egg hunt for sometime that weekend. Easter is kind of early this year. Hopefully we will get some good weather for the event. We will have a full rundown of all the Easter Egg hunts in next week’s paper.

The Iowa legislature sure looks to be having fun trying to get the budget balanced this year. I’m sure the lack of farm income this past year has not helped the cause. The problem is I don’t think that farm income is going to get much better this year. There are still mountains of corn all over the place that have not been transported. Usually by this time of year you don’t see mountains of corn still around. I’ve read several stories lately that the bio-fuel program supplemented by the government may not be long for this world next session. That would make the Iowa budget an even worse thing to try to figure out!

I’m two months removed from my sleeve surgery. So far I’m down 45 pounds. I feel great and have gotten pretty used to not eating things like cookies and candy bars. I’m 99 percent healed up. The clothes are getting baggier and things are going fine. I appreciate everyone’s support. I’ll never be twiggy, but if I can lose about a third to half my old weight I should be in good shape.

Just to let you know, the price of newsprint just keeps going up and up. That’s not a good thing for us or anybody else. The price of newsprint has gone up 25 percent in the last three months. Some companies have just announced what will be another 25 percent over the next two months. I’ve not seen anything like this in my 39-year career. Part of it is the new tariffs and part of it is the industry.

I can’t believe the number of new TV shows this spring. I don’t ever remember seeing this many new shows after the winter season. I’m glad I watch less TV these days.
