Throwback Thursday

Gold Emblem Award winners at the 2008 South Central District FFA Leadership Conference held in Centerville were Tyler Harris, Candace Weeda, Jared Johnston, Alec Smith, Jacob McGehee and Donovan Richardson. They advanced to the state competition in Ames.

Marc Roberg was presented with the Iowa Wildlife Officer of the Year award at a statewide conservation officers meeting in Guthrie Center. The award is presented by Shikar Safari Club International for dedication to the wildlife law enforcement profession and participation in activities outside of daily enforcement work.

20 years ago

Approximately 50 students in grades 8-12 gathered at Southern Prairie YMCA for the first large group meeting of a newly-formed Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) chapter. For an hour, the students shared open activities at the YMCA, followed by large group games and a session on the goals of FCA.

SWCC Board approved the early retirement of Ron “Fox” Clinton as full-time physical education instructor. He had been a teacher and coach at SWCC since 1967. Fox indicated he wanted to continue coaching women’s basketball and softball, and possibly act as athletic director.

After a week of hard work clearing snow, Union County road crews finally had all gravel roads in the county open to traffic.

Opening night of “Titanic” at Strand Theatre found people standing in line for more than an hour. Manager Scott Grimm said the theatre, which seats 300, filled up quickly and some were turned away at the door.

50 years ago

Specialist 5th class Richard Wenzig received an Army Commendation Medal for meritorious achievement in Thailand. During a fire Oct. 31-Dec. 1, 1967, that completely destroyed a downtown section of Korat, Thailand, Wenzig voluntarily manned and operated a bulldozer to create effective fire breaks during intense heat, dense smoke and great danger from burning buildings and exploding gases which successfully saved many other sections of the city.

Two 14-year-old boys were picked up by Creston police and state highway patrolmen after stealing another automobile in Creston. After questioning, the boys admitted to taking six cars that had been stolen during the past few nights. Each car was found damaged as the boys knocked down street signs, drove through yards and hedges and hit parked cars and fences with them. The boys were released in custody of their parents and were to appear before Justice of the Peace Vernon Wagaman.

Some election officials were on record with a claim they made an error which caused Madison County’s Feb. 20 liquor election to pass. Union township board said they reported their vote total as 46-39 for legal sale of liquor by the drink when it should have been against it by the same count. The county had a total vote of 1,592 to 1,580 to allow sale of liquor and it should have been 1,588 to 1,584 to stay dry. The county had been dry by 39 votes since October 1963.

Three movies were showing at the Strand theater in Creston and were “To Sir, With Love” with Sidney Poitier, “Tony Rome” with Frank Sinatra and “Flipper’s New Adventure.”

Petitions asking for a vote in the East Union community school district on a proposed $765,000 bond issue for construction of a 6-year high school and junior high school building were circulated in the district. Efforts were being made to have enough signatures so the school board could hold a special election in late April or early May. A site one-quarter mile east of the Union County fairgrounds with 40 acres was the first choice of the board.
