1 dead, 3 injured in Adair County crash

GREENFIELD – One person is dead and three were injured after a three-car accident Tuesday morning on Highway 25 north of Greenfield.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Serena Sims, 34, of Fontanelle was driving a 2002 Ford southbound on Highway 25 and David Nail, 32, of Corning was driving a 2012 Buick northbound at the 65 mile marker of Highway 25 when Sims lost control of her vehicle and crossed the center line, striking Nail’s vehicle head on.

Sims’ vehicle came to rest on the east shoulder of Highway 25 and Nail’s vehicle spun and came to rest in the middle of the roadway facing north. Dale Zoubek, 42, of Katy, Texas, driving a 2015 Dodge, came over the hill after the collision and was unable to stop due to the snow-covered roads, and Zoubek’s vehicle struck the rear of Nail’s vehicle.

Julie Compton, 60, of Fontanelle, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was transported to Adair County Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Julie Holmes, 34, of Bridgewater, also a passenger in one of the vehicles, Sims and Nail were all transported by ground ambulance to Adair County Memorial Hospital with injuries sustained in the crash.

The accident occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m., 6 miles south of Interstate 80 in rural Adair County.

“A southbound Ford SUV lost control and over-corrected. It collided head-on with a northbound Buick passenger car. There were three individuals in the SUV. One was fatal, one was injured and one was not injured,” Sgt. Nate Ludwig of the Iowa State Patrol said. “In the Buick that was in the northbound lane, one was injured.”

Ludwig reported weather was likely a factor in the crash.
