Winter weather wreaking havoc on area

Winter weather has taken its toll on the area this week, with ice followed by snow and then more ice.

Many school-related and non-school-related events have been postponed or canceled as a result of the weather.

Creston received .02 inches of freezing rain Tuesday, before 2 inches of snow and an additional .18 inches of freezing rain fell on the area Thursday, causing almost ice skating rink-like conditions in areas. More snow and freezing rain is expected into the weekend.

Creston Community School District had school Monday, followed by canceled classes Tuesday, a two-hour late start Wednesday and then canceled classes both Thursday and this morning.

CCSD Superintendent Steve McDermott initially announced on Twitter this morning the district would have a 2-hour late start, saying, “Buying some time to see how soon it warms up. Stay tuned!”

“No school after all today at Creston Community Schools, Friday, Feb. 23. Still too slick in spots. Better safe than sorry,” McDermott tweeted three hours later.

The Creston Community School District’s PTO Carnival, scheduled for 5:15 today in the Creston Community Elementary/Middle School is still on, as of press time.

East Union Schools also initially announced a two-hour late start today, before eventually canceling classes. East Union School also announced the PTO Dinner and a Movie Night originally scheduled for tonight has been postponed to a later date to be determined.

The weather has affected extracurricular activities, as well. The Creston boys basketball team was originally scheduled to open postseason play in Harlan against Carroll on Monday, but those games were postponed to Tuesday, when Creston defeated Carroll 69-65 in overtime to advance to Thursday’s district final in Harlan against the Cyclones.

But, again, the weather caused that game to be postponed until 7 p.m. today in Harlan. Nodaway Valley faced the same issue, originally scheduled to play a district semifinal game in Red Oak on Monday, before that game was postponed until Tuesday. Then, Thursday’s district final game in Clarinda against Bedford was postponed to 7 p.m. today.

Southwestern Community College’s disc golf club was scheduled to host an indoor disc golf tournament at the college Thursday evening, but canceled the event because of the weather.

Likewise, the Lions Club Spud Supper, scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Creston, was postponed until the same time tonight.

The University of Iowa Symphony Orchestra concert, hosted by The Warren Cultural Center in Greenfield and scheduled to perform 7 p.m. today at Nodaway Valley High School, has been postponed to a later date because of the weather.
