Treynor rolls past Mount Ayr

RED OAK — They’re No. 2 for a reason.

The Treynor Cardinals swooped into Red Oak Monday and left the Mount Ayr Raiderettes bamboozled in a 76-42 swashbuckling in the Class 2A Region 7 final.

Konnor Sudmann and Madelyn Deitchler were unstoppable with the basketball in their hands, as the duo combined for 41 points in the first half and 55 during the game.

Mount Ayr fell behind 14-0 early, while seeming incapable of besting Treynor’s pressure, be it in the full court or half court.

Keirston Klommhaus was an early bright spot for the Raiderettes, as her effort on both ends of the floor made Mount Ayr competitive again. Klommhaus assisted on her team’s first bucket of the game, then scored Mount Ayr’s next four points.

She scored 20 points and plucked down 10 rebounds. Sam Stewart didn’t get going until later on, as she netted 14 points.

Treynor led 21-9 after a quarter and stretched the advantage to 26 points after another flurry of points from Sudmann and Deitchler.

The scrappiness seen late in the first half didn’t reflect the difference in scores, as Mount Ayr shook off its early jitters to bring a fight back to the Cardinals

“I am proud of this team for what they have accomplished this year,” Mount Ayr coach That Streit said. “Five new starters and to win 18 games and be in the regional final is a heck of an accomplishment for these girls. We ran into a buzzsaw tonight and we had our hands full. But the scoreboard does not represent how much fun we had this year.”

It was the defending state runner-ups’ skill that overwhelmed the Raiderettes time and again.

Seniors Caylie Hickman, Sara Winemiller and Abbey Schafer each played their final games on the hardwood with the Raiderettes. Each have been members of teams that have made regional final games the last three seasons, though each experienced a drastically more crucial role on this year’s team that finished 18-6.

“These girls played well with each other and they played for each other,” said. “We are going to miss our seniors and their leadership that they gave us.”
