Tim Sullivan to headline Parks and Rec comedy night

Iowa comedian Tim Sullivan will headline this year’s Creston Parks and Recreation Board fundraiser, “A Night of Comedy,” being held 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Creston Eagles Lodge.

The evening starts with a social hour from 5 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a smoked prime rib dinner, auction and entertainment from Sullivan.

Tickets cost $30 and can be purchased at Eagles Lodge, Creston News Advertiser, from Park and Rec board members or by calling 641-782-2000 ext. 208.

“It’s a bargain for 30 bucks,” said Creston Parks and Recreation Board Member John Kawa. “You get a prime rib dinner and a comedian, that if you drove to Des Moines, it’d cost you more than that for a burger and nobody. Some locals have heard him and say he’s really funny, so we’ve got a good one here.”

Sullivan has traveled all across North America headlining shows and opening for famous comedy acts, such as Dave Chappelle, Bob Saget, Mick Foley and The Impractical Jokers.

“This is my life. This is what I have been doing since I was a little kid, but am getting paid for now. I love comedy and love the audiences and hate anything that keeps me from it,” Sullivan said on his website.

Sullivan’s website says his show does not single anyone out and no one needs to worry about being made fun of. His show is not designed to prove any political points, either.

“But one thing I can promise you is that it will make you laugh and hopefully let you forget about your problems for an hour,” Sullivan said on his website.

Sullivan was recommended to the Parks and Recreation Board by comedians who have headlined the show in the past.

After sifting through online videos, the board settled on Sullivan to be this year’s entertainment.

Kawa said he expects somewhere between 200 and 300 people to attend the event, which is the Parks and Recreation Board’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

“It’s one of our bigger moneymakers for the park,” Kawa said. “The park needs the money. It’s a good thing. Everything we do [to improve the park], we have to have matches to get grants. So we have to get money ourselves. This is for our matching funds.”

The Parks and Recreation Board has been working to improve the shelter houses throughout the park, and is currently working on the shelter houses on the north end of West Adams Street.

Kawa said he hopes to install some blacktop around some areas in the park, and that the VFW Field is another big project for the department in the coming year.

“We’re trying to do some things to bring that field back,” he said. “That’s a big project coming up.”

Some of the auction items include an Iowa Cubs skybox with eight tickets, collectible coins, gift packages from the auto retailers in town, baskets from many local businesses, and dinner, pool and shelter house rental for 50 people.

Kawa thanks everyone who has attended in the past and who plans to attend again this year.

“Tickets are still available. It is a good time. The food is wonderful. The comedian is good,” Kawa said. “You can’t do it for $30 anywhere. It’s a bargain to me.”
