Mary Welsch, 84, of Greenfield died Monday, Feb. 12, 2018, at Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Greenfield.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at St. John's Catholic Church in Greenfield with burial in Greenfield Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the committal services at the cemetery. The Rev. James Ahenkora will officiate the service. Visitation with family present will be one hour prior to services Friday morning at the church. Memorials may be directed to Greenfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center or St. John's Council of Catholic Women. Mary Alice (Scanlan) Welsch, daughter of Joseph Charles and Elizabeth Martha (Miller) Scanlan, was born Oct. 31, 1933, on a farm northeast of Prescott in Adams County. Mary and her family lived southeast of Creston, then moved to a farm near Nodaway in 1940. Mary attended the Nodaway Consolidated School from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 1952. After attending college at Ottumwa Heights Junior College, she attended Northwest Missouri State Teacher’s College in Maryville, Missouri. Mary taught second grade in Van Meter for two years. In the fall of 1956, she began teaching second grade in Greenfield Community Schools until the spring of 1965. Later in life, she was a substitute teacher for many years.

On June 13, 1959, Mary married Richard G. Welsch at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Villisca. In the fall of 1961, they moved to a farm southwest of Greenfield.

Mary was a member of TOPS, served her community many years through St. Johns Altar and Rosary Society and volunteered for many local organizations.

Mary is survived by her husband Richard Welsch of Greenfield; children, Marcella Welsch of Indianola, Doug Welsch of Greenfield, Kathleen (Shane) Brinning of Keota and Nancy (Terry) Miller of New Providence; grandchildren, Rick and Ruth Welsch, McKenna, Morgan and Taylor Brinning and Rachel, Tyler and Nathan Miller; sister Bernadette Morris of Council Bluffs; brother John (Bonnie) Scanlan of Yuma, Arizona; other relatives and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Theresa McCall and Elizabeth Gray; and brothers, Donald and James Scanlan.
