IOLA, Kan. – Southwestern Community College’s baseball team opened its season with back-to-back doubleheaders against Allen County Community College.
The Spartans took the first game against ACCC 12-2 in six innings thanks to a 3 for 3 day from Jose Mendez who plated three runners while also hitting a home run.
Southwestern smashed four doubles over the course of the game.
SWCC also got a solid start from Oscar Rivera who pitched five innings of work while allowing just one earned run on six hits and striking out five.
In the second half of the Thursday doubleheader, SWCC fell 11-9 in seven innings and gave up at least one run in every inning.
Jadriel Pantoja roped three home runs over the course of the seven inning game, scoring six runs.
Friday’s doubleheader was swept by ACCC, taking the games by scores of 11-1 and 9-2.
In the first half of the doubleheader the Spartans only managed one hit and walked twice.
AJ Slaughter, of Glenwood High School, threw three innings of relief, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six batters.
SWCC lost the back half of the doubleheader 9-2 in seven innings.
Stephan Soto and Marcus Chieves knocked in the two runs for the Spartans.
Quentin Sefrit, formerly of Bedford High School, scored a run, struck out and walked while playing at first base.
The Spartans committed five errors in the field in the final game.
As a unit, Southwestern batted .274 over the course of the four games and scored 24 runs.
UP NEXT – SWCC (1-3) travels to Enid, Okla. to take on Northern Oklahoma College in another four-game series, consisting of two doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
