Middle school girls basketball update: first games

The eighth grade A team girls basketball squad dropped a close game to start its season Monday against Clarinds 40-36.

Brianna Fields' 19 points came on seven buckets and 5 of 6 free throw shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds.

"We did a lot of good things in our first game," coach Larry McNutt said. "We just couldn't score in that fourth quarter. It was a good effort and we look forward to playing them again."

Seventh girls dominate

Aleah Calvin scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in leading Creston seventh-grade girls to a 44-8 victory over Clarinda in Monday's season opener.

Calvin also had a team-high five steals for the Panthers, who led 27-2 at halftime. Jacy Kralik and Tristen Rice each scored six points. Kralik and Harlee Flynn grabbed six rebounds each. Caitlin Bruce had four steals. Keely Coen and Kralik each distributed two assists.

"Clarinda has an inexperienced seventh-grade group this year," Creston coach Larry Peterson said. "Our girls were a little nervous playing for the first time, but once they settled down a little they were executing well. They were finding each other with some good passes. It was a good way to start the season by getting a lot of kids in to get game experience."

Clarinda, which had seven total players available for the games, won the second game 12-4. Shyla Stow and Kiarliz Rodriguez each scored two points for Creston.

"The girls battled hard against Clarinda kids who played in the A game," Peterson said. "For being in their first game ever, they did a good job."
