Rich Paulsen - What’s Up

The State House is up and running again for another session

The legislature is up and running again. Let the usual mudslinging begin. Heaven forbid that we can get folks to work together. There is enough blame to go around for both sides. A lot of politicians wonder how someone like Trump got elected. He only beat out 17 politicians from his own party, then beat out the top Democrat politician. I believe that a lot of everyday people have had about enough with the day-to-day politics and are looking for an alternative.

A good round of term limits for everything from local races to the federal folks would probably do our country good. I hear more and more people talking about the idea every day. Enough of that “soap box.”

I hope the State of Iowa can get its budget situation figured out. I would not be surprised by the time they get through it that they may have to come up with more money. Three dollar corn and $9 soybeans are going to make it a lot harder to balance the budget of an ag state. As Yoda would say, “May the force be with you!”

Blood

I try to give a pint of blood every couple of months. I now get a email from the Red Cross telling me where they send my blood after the donation. Last month, my pint of blood went to the VA hospital over in Omaha. Two months before that, my blood made it out to Massachusetts. They say they try to use it locally but will send it out to wherever it may be needed. I’ve been giving blood for a long time. I think it is a good thing to do and helps a lot of people along the way. You never know when you may need someone to return the favor.

Weather

I read the Accuweather forecast. Back in October, they said our area will not see a lot of snow and unusually frigid conditions. So far, they have hit that forecast on the nose. They were showing the alligators down in Florida sticking their noses up through the ice to survive the conditions. The other fun video was of the iguanas freezing up and falling out of the trees. It’s been a pretty brutal winter for those folks down South. They’re not used to it like us diehard Iowans! Of course, my friend from Arizona keeps texting me how it is 75 degrees and sunny. Nice guy!

Snowbirds

It looks like the real cold weather lately has sent most of the snowbirds south for the winter. We get a lot of folks who now get their newspaper online, which is a lot better way to get the information far away. Believe me, mailing a paper to Florida, Arizona or out of state is almost not worth the effort. You either get five papers at once two weeks after they are printed or the Wednesday paper shows up after the Friday paper printed two days later. And they wonder why the post office is losing money!

Scrapbookers

This weekend is our annual Scrap-A-Thon out at the Supertel Inn. It starts Friday night and goes till Sunday. These ladies amaze me on how they can stay up all day and most of the night and still scrapbook on three hours of sleep. It must be all the goodies they consume to keep them going.
