Kiwanis
The weekly Kiwanis meeting was held 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at the Windrow meeting room with 16 members and two guests. President Korina Loudon presided, Jim Morris gave the prayer and Roger Lanning was the finemaster.
The program was given by Mary O’Riley from the Creston Area Food Pantry and O’Riley Center. She discussed the history of the food pantry and the need for their services of helping feed the hungry. They have helped more than 300 families the last three months of 2017 with 150 volunteers. The O’Riley Center was also discussed as a place to rent for family and community events. It can service about 120 people with a sliding fee scale according to the activity it’s booked for.
If anyone wants to start the new year helping give back to kids and the community, consider joining Creston Kiwanis. New members are always welcome.

Catholic Daughters
Court Joan of Arc No. 428 met Dec. 12 in the church hall following Mass. A dinner was served by the committee of Teresa Weis, Iris Smith, Pat Pokorny and Ann Moore. Anita Studer presented a very interesting and informative program on the Algona Prisoner of War Nativity. Some members brought a favorite nativity set of their own to share.
The business meeting was opened by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The treasurer’s report was read and approved. The minutes were approved with one correction. Lois Nelson reported the ReRun has been very busy. They will hold a Christmas dinner 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Windrow. Pokorny gave the Right to Life report. January marks the 45th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion. A ceremony will be held Jan. 21 at the cemetery commemorating the decision and to pray for an end to abortion. We will be helping two people with Christmas baskets this year.
Janet Brown won the door prize. We recited our membership prayer to close the meeting. Kris Kerrigan made the motion to adjourn. Weis seconded it. Meeting adjourned.

Creston United Methodist Women
The Creston United Methodist Women executive committee met Dec. 7 with six officers and the special events coordinator present. Sandy McNichols presided with the UMW Purpose being read in unison and joys and concerns were shared.
For devotions, Beth Perry read a meditation entitled “Think” from the Response Magazine. Scripture was from Isaiah 40:1-5, closing with a prayer.
Two thank you notes were read by the secretary. Minutes were approved as written and the treasurer’s report was approved as presented.
The vice president brought copies of the 2018 program book to be looked over and corrected for any errors. It will be printed for the December Circle meetings.
Installation of officers for 2018 will be held Jan. 21.
It was recommended by executive that $50 be given to the Creston Christmas Basket Fund and $50 to Bidwell Riverside. Pastor Jodi has asked the UMW to do another church service sometime in 2018.
The December Bible verse of Luke 2:19 was read in unison.
Following executive, the unit meeting convened with Ann Driskell introducing Lynn Baker, who provided beautiful Christmas music on the piano. Driskell read three readings entitled: “If Jesus Came to Your House,” “The True Meaning of Christmas” and “Christmas Miracles” from Chicken Soup. Isaac Finehout then played contest music on his clarinet.
Devotions were the same as for executive.
McNichols again presided at the unit meeting. Rosalie Denton read the minutes of the September 2017 unit meeting and the treasurer’s report was presented. Roll call was answered by three Morning Circle members, seven Evening Circle members and two guests.
The unit approved the recommendation on the donations from the executive.
Bobi Woodin presented a Response Minute from the Response Magazine about a heart hospital in India. It has been there for 20 years and is supported by United Methodist Women.
The unit meeting was adjourned. Refreshments were served by Evening Circle. The tables were decorated with candy cane favors with the Legend of Candy Canes attached. There were five poinsettias on the tables which were given away in a drawing.
Morning Circle met Dec. 15 in Fellowship Hall with Peg Anderson as hostess and Susan Weight presided. Perry had the devotions about “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day.” They also sang the song together. The program was members telling what they were doing for Christmas.
Evening Circle met on Dec. 21 at Kay Ritter’s for a salad supper. There were six in attendance. Visiting was the evening program. The young women also met Dec. 21 at Ritter’s with two in attendance.

Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary
Ladies Lakeshore Auxiliary met Jan. 3.
Canasta winners were Wanda Nash, first; Mary Kline, second; and Joy Seeley, third.
Gwen Sandeman won the door prize.
Cheri Lilly will host cards and chatter Wednesday, Jan. 10.
