Girls team has many new faces this season

By STEVE THOMPSON

Fontanelle Observer

Coach Tom Thompson must replace a bevy of graduated seniors this season, including a pair of first team all-conference picks.

Gone are Josie Clarke and Paige McElfish, the top two scorers in NV history, who combined for 31 points a game last season. The Wolverines finished last season 13-3 in the conference and 18-5 overall.

Thompson will have just one senior on this year’s team, with Jodi Baudler returning after scoring 3.3 points a game, dishing out 41 assists and coming up with 36 steals.

The Wolverines return second team all-conference pick Annie Herr. Herr averaged 7.3 points a game, had 43 assists and 51 steals on the year.

Addie Lamb averaged 3.9 points per game last season to go along with 35 assists and 22 steals.

Vying for playing time will be Reagan Weinheimer, McKynli Newbury, Macy Kuhns, Lexi Shike, Corinne Bond, Kynna Young, McKynna Newbury, Alyssa Davis and Naomi Daugherty.

“Practice has been going well,” said Thompson. “They have been hard workers, and they are excited about the program and the season.”

There are a couple of things that Thompson is worried about at the start of the season.

“Rebounding and ball security are my biggest concerns,” he said.

The fact that many of the girls have been together for most of the summer should help them progress a little faster.

“They started working together last May and have put in many summer hours,” Thompson said. “I expect us to exceed many people’s expectations. We will play a big rotation and plan to pressure the ball and run the floor. It should be a fun year for us.”

The Wolverines got their season underway Nov. 21 at West Central Valley with a 72-46 win.
