HCI Hospice Care Services completes cherished quilt for Osceola woman

OSCEOLA – When a hospice patient’s eyes were failing before she could see a cherished project to completion, HCI Hospice Care Services rallied help to bring her vision to life.

The HCI Hospice Care Services team in Osceola began caring for Osceola resident Jo Caylor earlier this year. Caylor has progressive supranuclear palsy – a disease affecting not only her ability to walk, but also causing her eyesight to deteriorate. Caylor now lives in a nursing home in Creston, where she receives hospice care visits from the HCI Hospice Care Services team of nurses, aides, social workers, bereavement and spiritual care counselors and compassionate volunteers.

Beth Harman, a pet visitor volunteer with HCI Hospice Care Services, makes frequent visits to hospice patients with her therapy dog, Splash. Harman and Caylor hit if off from their first visit, and Caylor has found comfort in stroking Splash’s soft ears and head.

“We were chatting one day, and I noticed Jo was feeling sad,” Harman said. “She said that because her eyesight was failing, she wouldn’t be able to finish a quilt she had started for her granddaughter. I could see how important this was to Jo, and I was determined to find a way to help.”

Harman asked Caylor’s brother, Cliff Pashek, to find the quilt. She then enlisted the aid of several quilting friends. The group gathered batting and backing, sewed the border and binding, quilted the fabric and were able to complete the quilt in record time.

Harman and Splash presented the completed quilt Nov. 10 to Caylor. Caylor was thrilled and said she knew her granddaughter would love it.

“In hospice, every moment matters,” said Karen Irwin, volunteer coordinator with HCI. “Our staff and volunteers are honored to bring our patients and their families moments of joy and celebration.”
