Darlene Weeda, 86, of Afton died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017.
Open visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m., and concluding time of prayer and sharing at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge St., in Afton. Private burial will be at Tingley Cemetery, north of Tingley. Memorials can be given to Afton Fire and Rescue Squad or the East Union band and music program. Darlene Merle (Greimann) Weeda, daughter of Nicholas Lyle Greimann and Zada Florence (Messinger) Greimann, was born Sept. 10, 1931, in Ringgold County. Darlene graduated from Arispe High School in 1949. She worked as a hired hand for her dad, doing lots of farm work including thrashing and helping operate machinery.
On April 14, 1957, Darlene married Paul Arie Weeda at the Methodist Church in Grant City, Missouri. They settled on a farm southeast of Arispe where they lived most of their married life. She worked at the Arispe School kitchen and cleaned Tingley State Savings Bank and Community Hall. The family later moved into Afton, where Darlene babysat in their home. Paul died in 1983. Darlene painted and refurbished homes for Marion Austin for four years. In 1987, she moved to Lorimor where Darlene opened a licensed daycare for 24 years. In 2006, Darlene moved to her retirement home in Afton.
Darlene was a member of the Methodist Church in Tingley and Afton and “Live Wire” Neighborhood Club.
Darlene is survived by her stepsons, Kenny (Marilyn) Weeda of Tingley and Keith Weeda of Omaha, Nebraska; daughters, Linda (Jeff) Grandfield of Lorimor and Teresa Kurtz (significant other Glenn Payne) of Oregon, Missouri; 24 grandchildren, including their spouses; 32 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul, daughter-in-law Cindy Weeda, four brothers and two sisters.
