Getsferd challenges Carroll for Ward 3 council seat

Editor’s note: This is the final set of candidate profiles prior to the Tuesday, Nov. 7, city elections.

Gabe Carroll

AGE: 35

WORK HISTORY: “Chiropractor for Carroll Family Chiropractic.”

HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU SERVED ON CITY COUNCIL?

I was appointed to Ann Levine’s seat and then I ran for re-election once and this will be my second time running for election.”

WHY DO YOU WANT TO REMAIN ON CITY COUNCIL?

I just enjoy the process of learning how the city works and figuring out what steps we need to take to get things lined so that we have a positive growth in the future so city council seems like a good place to get involved.”

WHAT WOULD YOUR TOP PRIORITY BE FOR NEXT TERM?

I think we’re really trying to focus on housing and getting our delinquent properties kind of back in line and our ordinances enforced so that the houses that are not being taken care of properly can be assessed to get our housing situation straightened out. Then our infrastructure projects are probably our second one, with the water treatment plant and then the roads, so just kind of keeping an eye on what our plans are for those projects going forward.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE POSITION THAT SOMEONE ELSE CAN’T?

I don’t know about what someone else can’t. I just know that I like to learn and look into situations that come up and try to understand them from everybody’s point of view and then do what I think is best for the city. I just try to be as well informed in the situation as I can.”

Michael Getsferd

AGE: 61

WORK HISTORY: “Right now I work at Wellman’s. I’ve done everything from sales to been in a management position in egg processing plants in the food industry. When I first moved to Creston I worked for Midwestern Diskette; they were a software duplication company. I was kind of responsible for bringing the internet down here.”

WHY DO YOU WANT TO JOIN CITY COUNCIL?

I had some questions regarding Fremont Street and I contacted one of the council members and couldn’t really get an answer to my questions. Basically, what they said was come to a council meeting or run for city council because we run unopposed. So, the reason I want to run for city council is to provide some measure of accountability, explain the actions or decision made by city council and offer some transparency which is basically explaining to people why or how the decisions were made. I don’t see the council as really keeping people informed that well.”

WHAT WOULD YOUR TOP PRIORITY BE FOR NEXT TERM?

This is my first foray into politics. Basically, I would like to see better management of the money we pay in taxes.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU BRING TO THE POSITION THAT SOMEONE ELSE CAN’T

I had leadership skills, I know there are a lot of people out there with leadership skills. I think I bring a more down-to-earth perspective to the decision making process. My main goal is to keep the citizens in mind that elected me. I’m working for them, not for the city. Although the city requires a certain amount of attention, I’m looking at answering questions for the people and making sure the decisions that are being made are in line with what they want.”
